I have noticed that the 1st season DVD are the syndicated prints and there is no original NBC opening or the Alistair Quince opening of the show. The ending of the show is the JHP logo(Joe Hamilton Productions) followed by the mid 90's Telepictures logo.

    Questions are as follows:

    1. Are the original NBC openings gone for good?

    2. Are there legalities between the estate of Alistair Cooke from Masterpiece Theater in why the Harvey Korman/Alistair Quince openings are not there?

Warner Brothers released a statement today about this. Apparently, they don't actually own the original versions, just the cut syndicated ones, so they weren't able to provide the originals on the DVDs. The statement can be read here. So no, the originals aren't gone for good; Warner just didn't have access to them. Kind of disappointing, since I was looking forward to seeing any cut footage that I've never seen before (since I've only watched the show in syndication).

I'm also disappointed that the DVD set doesn't have any special features.

John Hamilton, Joe Hamilton's son, owns the rights to the original uncut episodes. But because of some contractual agreement with Warner Brothers, he cannot release them. What that agreement is, I have no idea.

Actually Warner Brothers does not own the first 2 seasons.

Thats why the episodes were edited.

If we see season 3 released  then they should be full episodes bein Warner owns from season 3 on.
