Naomi announces that she and Vint can't get pregnant because Vint is "shooting blanks," so Iola suggests that they try to adopt a baby. Luckily, Iola has a cousin who works for an adoption agency in Hinkley, so she sets up an interview.
It goes well as they pass interview after interview easily, until the final one. After telling the Adoption Agency that Mama will take care of the child, they have to meet with Dr. Richards, a family psychologist. They arrive at his office fighting already over Vint taking the wrong way, causing them to be late.
Dr. Richards asks Vint if his childhood was good, but he's afraid to say anything with Mama there. So Dr. Richards blocks Mama from influencing her son's answer, and Vint tells the Doctor that Mama never really supported him in anything. That sets Mama off, and she begins to complain about her Mother, greatly embarrassing her family. The session ends early.
Mama is convinced everything went well, but Iola reveals that they have been turned down. Vint is very angry with Mama and threatens to move out, finally declaring his independence. But just then Naomi comes in with news that she has found out she is in fact with child. Vint begs Mama's forgiveness, and an upset Mama tells her son that she'll be there for her grandchild.
