EDIT
Mama on Jeopardy
AIRED:
When Iola hears that Jeopardy's holding local auditions in Raytown, she drags Thelma along instead of going to the white sale. Iola is mostly interested in meeting Alex Trebek (who isn't in town). So as it turns out Mama is the only one who could answer more than two questions correctly (both about Shakespeare) and they end up inviting her to appear on the show. Her opponents on Jeopardy quickly jump out to a huge lead and Mama has a hard time getting into the game. At the end of the Double Jeopardy! round, Mama lucks up and answers a thousand dollar question right and then gets a Three Stooges question and manages to get herself out of the hole by $100 and is elgible to play Final Jeopardy! The Final Jeopardy! category is Shakespeare, but the question completely stumps her, and the champion wins again! Thelma thinks she's going home with Press-On Nails, but announcer Johnny Gilbert tells her she's won a trip for 4 to Hawaii. She kisses Alex, which makes Iola faint & annouces she's taking her worthless family with her to Hawaii.moreless

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (4)

      • Goof: Even though clearly in the episode "Pomp and Circumstance" Thelma, and Bubba graduate, but in the beginning of the episode they mention they have to do work in school!

      • Timeline: This is the 2nd time the family goes on a Game Show. The first time was episode 7, "Family Feud."

      • Goof: During Gameplay, sometimes they would answer when the timer lights on their podeum went out. But, in actual gameplay, their turn would have been over. And someone else would answer.

      • Goof: Unlike when the family went on Family Feud, Mama must have been on some strange live television version of Jeopardy. She's not there at the Harper House while the rest watch her on TV, so, it must be inferred she's on the game show in real time as she's being watched. Usually, it takes 1 to 2 months from taping a Jeopardy to editing it, distributing it, and airing it.

    • QUOTES (18)

      • Alex: Let's move on to Cynthia and let's see if she came up with the correct question.
        (Cynthia reveals her response)
Alex: What is Marlowe? No. I'm afraid that's wrong, Cynthia. And what did you bet?
        Cynthia: All of it, Alex!
Mama: Oh! What a shame. That leaves you with nothin'.

      • Alex: (after Ludlow's incorrect response) How much did you bet?
Mama: All of it, please. All of it!
        (Ludlow reveals his wager)
        Alex: $200.
        Mama: You gutless wonder!

      • Alex: With Thelma having $100, she will be able to stick around and play Final Jeopardy!
        Thelma: That is correct, Alex!

      • Naomi: While you're down there Mrs. Harper, will you pick Vinton and me up a new set of sheets?
Vint: Yeah. Our old ones are all worn out.
Mama: Again? Lord, I think you two oughtta give up on sheets and cover your mattress in Astroturf.

      • Alex: Do you have any hobbies, for instance?
Ludlow Baxter: Oh, yes I do Alex. Uh, to unwind I like to play chess with my computer and memorize Encyclopedias.
        Mama: Well get down Ludlow.

      • Bubba: Well, I couldn't make anything out of this "Romeo and Juliet."
Naomi: Oh, I just love that movie. Do you remember baby? Those naked teenagers and that Johnny Mathis song.
Vint: I thought that was How To Stuff A Wild Bikini.

      • *Alex tells Cynthia to describe herself*
Cynthia Lane: And just a few of the degrees I've earned are a BA, a MFA, and a PHD.
Mama: Yeah, but do you have a MRS?

      • Vint: Mama's wrong. The only time Big Bird ever stumped me was with the silent K.

      • (Alex asks Mama who she wants to take to Hawaii with her)
Mama: Alex, I would just love to take Paul Newman and Robert Redford and Tom Selleck, but I'm sure they're all busy. I guess that means I'm just gonna hafta take my worthless family!

      • Vint: There's Mama!
Naomi: Boy, they're right though. Television does add ten pounds to your figure.

      • Bubba: Mmm, boy. Popcorn!
Naomi: Yes Bubba and it's fresh too. I just opened the bag myself.

      • *The "Jeopardy!" people ask Mama how she'd like to be on "Jeopardy!"*
Mama: No, I don't think so. Wouldn't you rather have Iola?
        Mr. Herkle: I would!

      • Bubba: Well, what about "King Lear?"
Mama: Oh, that's the story of my life. How ungrateful children can drive ya nuts.

      • Vint: Gee Mama, you're lucky you got no social life to get in the way of your studying.
Mama: And Vinton, you're lucky you got no brain to clutter up your head.

      • Ludlow Baxter (returning Jeopardy champion): That is correct Alex! (repeated several times)

      • Fred: The next answer is "Eye of Newt, Toe of frog, Wool of bat, tongue of dog."
Iola: Well that is disgusting, I've never heard anything so vile.

      • Alex Trebek: (reading Thelma's answer to the final question): "What is Bubba?" I'm afraid that's not correct.
        Thelma: I had a feeling it wasn't.

      • Mama: Just what makes you think they're gonna put you on that program? You gotta be real smart to be on "Jeopardy!".
Bubba: Yeah Miss Boylen, those questions they ask are pretty tough.
Vint: Yeah. I can't even answer um.
Mama: Vinton you can't even answer the questions on "Sesame Street."
