Episode Summary

Soup to Nuts
Mama is the editor of the years church bazaar cookbook, in it she plans to use her own recipe for Chili. Iola objects thinking it should be hers that Mama uses. Soon Naomi too throws her hat in the ring, saying she makes the best Chili. So the three decide to have to a chili cook-off with the winner getting her recipe in the cookbook. Vint, being stuck in the middle of this brewing argument, is choosen, against his will, as the judge of the contest. All three have identical supplies, with Mama and Iola also have identical ingredients. While Naomi's chili is far different from the other two as it includes two giant cans of store bought chili, plus beer, cheetos and several other items not usually associated with chili. Each bringing back a certain memory from one of her ex-husbands or boyfriends. Each bowl is lettered as the contest begins and Vint decides the 'B' bowl is the best, which belongs to Iola, and she runs home to show her father and dare her mother to throw it out again. As soon as she is gone though, Mama and Naomi force Vint to make his real decision, but instead, he dumps both bowls together, saying it's got to be the best chili ever, but after just one bite he starts gagging.       • Naomi tells Mama and Iola how she used to make chili for her first husband Tommy Lee, but in a previous episode, she said that her first husband's name was Tommy Ray.

        Mama: "Well lord Bubba, how will you cope with the stress."

        Naomi: "Well of course I can cook, good enough for any ole church bazarre cookbook. In fact Ms. Harper if you really want the best recipe you'll use mine."
        Mama: "Well that's real nice just the same, but we've already got the best recipe."
        Iola: "No Thelma, we have yours."
        Mama: "And just who says your's is so good?!"
        Iola: "Vint!"
        Mama: "He was a teenager, he'd eat anything!"

    • NOTES (10)

      • The kitchen door is different than the first 2 seasons.  In The first 2 seasons the kitchen door was a four panel.  In The 3rd season the door has a push plate and a big panel.

      • There is a yellow wall hung rotary dial phone in the kitchen.  In the previous 2 seasons The Harper's had a black rotary dial phone in the living room.

      • In the opening introduction, Naomi's hair is curly in the picture. In the previous two seasons, Naomi's hairstyle is in a pony-tail in the picture.

      • In one of The Carol Burnett Show comedy sketches, Bubba did have a brother, Billy Joe. But in Mama's Family, he was never mentioned.

      • Starting with this episode, the kitchen floor is lighter than that of the season 2 episodes.

      • The new opening features new shots of the house, as well as a different, yet very similar logo.

      • Starting in season 3, there is a newer version of the end credit music. It is shorter by several seconds. (NOTE: Not all episodes from this point have the new version)

      • This episode, marks the start of an updated opening, Eric Brown, Rue McClanahan, and Karin Argoud being cut out, and Allan Kayser & Beverly Archer are added in. Also Ken Berry & Dorothy Lyman get new pictures, and Vicky Lawrence now fluffs a pillow and dusts Vint's pic.

      • This episode is shown out of order, logically. Farewell To Frannie introduces Bubba to the series, yet, this episode usually airs before that episode. But, Bubba is in Soup To Nuts, so, Farewell To Frannie actually belongs airing before this episode.
