In this episode there is a casual reference to a Chinese restaurant in Raytown that serves Moo Goo Gai Grits. This same joke was referenced about ten years earlier in the pilot episode of Welcome Back, Kotter when Freddie Washington says he shared his "background" with a Chinese family downstairs. Apparently, one of the writers was still thinking about this joke he heard years ago. It is too off the wall to be a coincidence.
It really DOES NOT take two to Watusi. The Watusi was a solo dance that enjoyed brief popularity during the early 1960s. It was almost as popular as the Twist.
Its name came from the Batutsi tribe of Rwanda.
Right after Luann goes into the storage closet, Mama comes in the door, meaning Mama would have been at that window when she went it. So why didn't Mama see her quickly sneak in?
Though Mama puts the trophy she won on her TV set, we never see it there again.
Vint asks Mama how old she is. Why don't her kids know her age? They remember her birthday, but they never seem to know how old she is.
Commentary/ObservationWhen the family shows up at the restaurant, Vint annoys Mama by throwing a fit when she won't go back and cook eggs the way he wants them. I know Vint is supposed to be a dimwit, but it's stretching for him not to understand he can only order off the menu.
Mama claims that she had never been on a plane before. Did she forget about the time she flew on a plane to appear on Family Feud?
Watch carefully when Iola receives her pearls from Mama. She puts them into her pocket and later on in the episode, they wind up behind a cushion on the sofa. Makes you wonder, how'd they get there?
When Mama is in the kitchen getting the turkey out of the oven, you can see Iola's dress sticking out a little from the basement door. She is standing there waiting on her cue obviously for when Vent and Naomi finish talking to Mama and leave the kitchen.
Mama has heard dishes break when she was out of the kitchen before, so why didn't she hear the gravy boat when it fell?
Not once, during the entire time Vint and the others were moving the trunk, did they notice a hole the size for a cat to enter it? Not once, during the entire time the trunk was moved, did the cats inside make ANY attempt to escape through the hole or make any noise at all?
The other cats found in the trunk seem to be awfully old or very large for kittens for a mother cat. Plus, the mother cat makes no attempt to stop anyone from picking up her or her kittens? Nor do the kittens try to scratch their way out, either? Lastly, none of the cats in the trunk resemble each other in any way in terms of fur colors, patterns, eye colors, etc. In fact, they appear to be of different breeds each.
The cats Thelma and the others keep are never seen again in the series. Even though in future episodes, other animals that should have attracted their attention (a parrot, a dog, a goose) appear around the house and yard.
This is the first episode in which Naomi's hair is permed.
Mama has been living with Naomi for three years, and has been knowing her for even longer. Why didn't she recognize her voice straight off?
Eddie Edwards would return for one more go three episodes later, hosting the beauty pageant in "Grandma USA."
Naomi tells Mama and Iola how she used to make chili for her first husband Tommy Lee, but in a previous episode, she said that her first husband's name was Tommy Ray.
Mama tells Ellen to return Mama's broach. This is the same broach she borrowed in the episode "Country Club." Did Ellen never return the broach before, or did she borrow it again?
