Episode Summary

EDIT
Mine Rescue Mask
AIRED:
It's 1916, and several workers involved in building a tunnel 250 feet beneath Lake Erie become trapped after an explosion. The workers and their rescuers have only one hope for getting out--Cleveland resident Garrett Morgan and his new rescue hood invention. After a tragic fire at rival sewing factory killed hundreds, Morgan became determined to invent a device that could save workers trapped in a fire or industrial accident. In 1914, he receives a patent for a large heat-resistant canvas hood with a tube that hangs toward the ground and enables the rescuers to breathe the filtered air. When the explosion occurs, eight workers are killed instantly, while eight more lay dying. Morgan arrives and, when no one else is willing to test the hoods, Garrett and his brother don the masks and heroically head down into the tunnel to pull out survivors.moreless

  • I am glad that this story has finally been told in the way in which it should be. Garrett Morgan was a man that was very intelligent and a brilliant inventor but was not recognized as such until many years after his death.moreless

The story of the Cleveland Tunnel disaster is one you will not hear of unless you really go looking or you live in Cleveland. The fact that many men lost their lives should be remembered but Garrett Morgan the man who saved many who would have died should also have been remembered. Garrett Morgan was eventually remembered after his death in Cleveland as they named a water plant after him. On July 24 1916 a gas explosion 250 feet below Lake Erie in the water tunnels left both men in the tunnels and two rescue crews dead or dying. Garret Morgan who had invented a smoke hood after seeing a fire in a factory was called to the scene to possible rescue the dying men. Garret risked his life to save men that would have otherwise died. He received many orders for his smoke hood the next day but many were cancelled after people realized he was a black man but the US government used his design to make gas masks for the war. Garrett continued to invent until his death. He was a great man that rose above the social predigest of the day.moreless
