This first episode of "Mannix" gets right down to business and tells the audience a great deal about the character of Joe Mannix before the dynamic credits even roll. He arrives at the Intertect offices, everything crisp and clean, with the company rule of only one sheet of paper on a desk at a time. Then we see Mannix's office, which looks like a cyclone had just blown through. He's an old-school operator in a modern, push-button, computer analysis agency, and it's his attitude and street smarts that get results.
Some great action set pieces dominate this episode - the ransom drop at the tram; the shootout at the lighthouse and the final showdown on the golf course that pits Mannix against a helicopter! In between all that, however, there's a standard, but well executed, PI plot about a kidnapped daughter and family secrets. The guest stars get trotted out for this one as well. Lloyd Nolan is Mannix's mobster client; Kim Hunter is his wife, and a pre-"Ironside" Barbara Anderson is the missing girl. But the hour really belongs to Mike Connors and Joseph Campanella, who have their love/hate bickering boss and operative relationship down from the get-go.
