  • Dr. Welby helps a man named Martin Loring, who is suffering for many ailments, including alcoholism, depression, diabetes, being overweight and "homosexual tendencies".

    4.0
Martin Loring consults with Dr. Welby for several different medical problems, partly, caused by being overworked and facing a nasty divorce and custody battle in court.

Had this been the episode's story, it probably would have been a decent episode. However, someone decided to add another "illness" to the character's many problems; homosexuality.

At a time when the mainstream medical establishment was beginning to realize that it was wrong to label homosexuality as a mental illness, this series seemed determined to treat homosexuality as a shamefully sickness.

This episode's homophobia is surprising given how generally forward thinking, cutting edge and progressive the television series was.

For all that was great about Marcus Welby M.D., the series failed its audience by depicting homosexuality as a illness and, in another episode, associating homosexuality with child sexual abuse.moreless
