Full Episode Summary

Arizona immigration law SB 1070 is scheduled to go into effect on July 29, 2010. Its purpose is to identify, prosecute, and deport illegal immigrants by requiring police officers to determine the immigration status of anyone they lawfully stop. While many people (including most Arizonans) approve of the law and feel it should be a national model, there has also been a strong reaction against it, as many others fear that the police may use racial profiling to identify people who may be undocumented. Opposition to the law has sparked protests across the country, a boycott of Arizona that will cost the state an estimated $90 million, and a challenge from the U.S. Department of Justice. In this edition of One-on-One, Maria explores the implications of this law-and the response to it-for the ongoing national debate.moreless
