  • Overall a very good episode, but also proof that the series should end as it recycles an old plot line from season 5.

    8.6
First of, the subplot of this episode is B.J. being holed up in the swamp and out of boredom, and annoyance with Charles, sets him up against Maj. Houlihan over her record player and his records. It demonstrates B.J.'s warped sense of humor, but also the intelligence of the two Majors who foil his plot. Nothing big here, and it's pretty forgettable as the real deal with the episode regards Potter and his old friend Col. Woody Cooke.

I felt this episode did a much better job with the idea that Potter was having to choose between his friend, and reporting the error he made, than a previous episode. The plot is a remake of the subplot in "Ping Pong", where Potter is in the same position, but there he immediately confronts his friend and tells him off, mostly in disappointment. This time, Potter goes off the deep end, getting very defensive over the accusations of his friend, until he eventually calms down and realizes that Hawkeye is right and that something must be done about "Woody".

On the one hand, I prefer the way this episode handled the issue of Potter's loyalty to his friends and his responsibility as an army Colonel, because in the other episode it was the subplot. However, recycling an old plot is a sign that the steam was running out of the show's writing and that it was time to end it. Thankfully, they already knew that.moreless

    • (After Potter confronted Woody about his incompetence)
      Hawkeye: You look like...
Potter: A man who just lost his best friend.
      Hawkeye: I'm sorry.
Potter: It's ok. Makes me appreciate the friends I have all the more.

    • Zurilli: My CO ordered us to steer clear of that ridge, the one where we all got hit. Next thing I know, Colonel Cook walks in and orders us to defend it. I tried to explain to him what was going on, but he gave me a direct order. We never would've ended up here if he hadn't taken over.
Col. Potter: How come this hasn't been reported to I Corp?
Zurilli: What's the use? Even if we did, it'd just get whitewashed along the way by someone who's a friend of Colonel Cook.
Col. Potter: Why didn't you report it to somebody here?
Zurilli: (bitterly) For the same reason, sir.

    • PA Announcer: Attention, all personnel. Wounded in the compound. You are hereby called to arms--broken, shattered, and missing.

    • Hunnicut: It's not my feet I'm worried about. I'm gonna be stuck here for two days with Charles and his dead children's glee club.

    • (Col. Potter told Woody he has to turn him in)
Woody: When the chips are down, you can you count on if you can't trust your friends?
Col. Potter: This has NOTHING to do with friendship!
Woody: You're damn right, NOT ANYMORE!
Col. Potter: Woody, don't you think we've been through too much to let it end like this?
      Woody:(furiously) I didn't end it! YOU DID!

    • (Charles is listening to Mahler on his phonograph...and, much to BJ's chagrin, rather loudly.)
      BJ: Charles! Charles!!
Charles: Hunnicut, please! I'm listening to music.
BJ: So is all of Korea!
Charles: If you don't like it, you are not only free to leave, you're encouraged to do so!
BJ: Believe me, Charles, if it weren't for this ingrown toenail, I'd be out of here at the speed of sound! Now turn that garbage down!
Charles: "Garbage"?! That garbage happens to be by Gustav Mahler, one of the greatest composers ever!
BJ: Sounds more like he's decomposing!
