  • This is where Alda's directing really killed the M*A*S*H we knew so far

    1.0
Certain episodes before this one foreshadowed a darker time for our mobile hospital, but it was in this episode that the trend that was to haunt the show for the rest of its days reared its... well, not so ugly as much as unwelcome head. Most movie critics split MASH into two parts; the Morgan/Cooper years and the Alda directing years. The first batch was dramedy; mixing war with a grain of salt, a good dose of a swift kick in the behind and a guffaw or two, it offered many sides to the war. Yes, it was unlikely, but as a TV series - masterful.

This episode was the first one to offer NO light. Just despair, perseverence, loss.

What it gained by that was the realisation of the actuality of war. But any documentary worth a damn will give you that. What it crushed was the very spirit Alda as Hawkeye was to portray - someone giving the middle finger to the war. An extremely disappointing, if well told, love story.moreless
  • hawkeye meets his korean love!

    10
-i have watched a lot of mash in my lifetime , but i have gotta say that this episode brought a tear to my eye. i kinda feel sorry that hawkeye has to abandon his love interests as his job comes first and his current state of affairs, and the war- seem to steer his love life all crazy.but he manages to preserve his good humor. i especially loved the part when they bring their own dinner to the broken down restaurant and they express their love for each other and dance the night away. i think this episode has moved me more than any other , highly recommend watching this to impress the ladies the hawkeye way!!!moreless

    • (Potter transfered Nurse Gleeson because Margaret was throwing a rage about her affair with Donald)
Margaret: Colonel Potter, there was no reason for you to transfer Lieutenant Gleeson! I can handle my personal feelings about her!
Potter: Look Margaret, I once had a beautiful gelding, could jump a fence as easily as you could step over a crack in the side walk. Only trouble was every time the horse saw my wife's blue Pontiac, he tried to jump over it. Now one of them had to go. I could've shot the horse, divorced my wife, or sold the car. Now what do you think I did?
Margaret: You could've painted the car.
Potter: You know, I never thought of that. Anyway, you're more important to me than Gleeson was, so I had her transfered.
Margaret: Well, I guess its over now.
Potter: I told them to send her as far away from here as they could.
      Margaret: ... NOT TOKYO?!
Col.Potter: ... Gee, I never stopped to think about it.
Margaret: (in tears) You never... you never...
Potter: I should've shot the horse.

    • Hawkeye: A fantastic woman. You know she's taken in a bunch of widows and kids to live with her?
Potter: That's why I put her at the head of the line.
Hawkeye: Why didn't you tell me?
Potter: Because when they make you a colonel, they take the bone out of your head that makes you explain orders.

    • Potter: Ah, do yourself a favor. Don't fall in love during a war.
      B.J.: Why shouldn't he?
Potter: Because war is cruel; for every hello there are two goodbyes.
Hawkeye: I wonder if she'd go out to dinner with me?
Potter: Love and war don't mix, (turns away and stares at tent pole) 'the rocket's red glare' is no candlelit supper.
B.J.: You realize you're talking to the post?
Potter: I may as well, I ain't getting anywhere with him.

    • Hawkeye: We'll never see each other again. We'll write a few notes as a graceful gesture, a futility, and . . . we'll never see each other again.

    • Hawkeye: Je suis poulet a la poetry.
      (Kyong Soon starts laughing)
      Hawkeye: What?
Kyong Soon: What did you mean to say?
Hawkeye: That I'm pulled toward poetry. What did I say?
Kyong Soon (still laughing): You said you were a chicken!

    • Hawkeye: What does Kyong Soon mean?
Kyong Soon: It means bright and obedient. But my father used to tease me. I'm not very obedient.

  • NOTES (2)

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Hawkeye says that if "Scott and Zelda" come to visit, tell them to wait by the pool. He is probably referring to writer F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda. Fitzgerald's novels often depicted privileged living during the Jazz Age of the 1920s.
