  • What about Margaret?

The character that probably was most difficult to write for in the later episodes of MASH must have been Margaret Houlihan. Originally a nasty, narrowminded, humourless army brat, she became mellower, possibly because her biggest ally Frank Burns disappeared and replacement Winchester didn't join her in her fight against Hawkeye & co. Perhaps Loretta Swit got bored with the one-sided character as well and so Margaret became more of an ally to Hawkeye. As she was not a natural joker, nor a foil for other people's jokes anymore, what could the writers do with her? I always believed that they should have spent more time on her military ambitions, but they decided to emphasize her personal problems. Luckily her stubbornness leads to goofy antics and so she provides enough comedy. But did we need to see another episode in which two character grew to like each other?
