    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • While in Potter's office, we see several of his paintings on the wall, including one of Hawkeye. However, it will not be until the following episode, "Hawkeye Get Your Gun", that Potter paints Hawkeye's portrait.

    • QUOTES (8)

      • (Frank explains to Hawkeye, B. J. and Colonel Potter in the mess tent how he managed to "get away" from the North Koreans.)
Burns: Those clowns didn't fool me for a minute. I knew they were Commies the whole time.
B.J.: Then why did you go with them?
Burns: Well, I figured I'd gather a little intelligence.
        Hawkeye: You could use it.
Burns: They pulled guns on me, so I gave them both a quick karate chop, knocked 'em cold and headed back to camp.
Potter: Why didn't you bring back the jeep?
        (Frank freezes in fear.)
        Burns: Uh, the jeep?
B.J.: Yeah, the jeep. It's a big, green thing.
Hawkeye: Looks like a turtle with a thyroid condition.
Potter: You let a jeep filled with medical supplies fall into enemy hands!
Burns: (pause) Well, it was the humanitarian thing to do. I mean, after all, they may be Commies but they're people, too. Sort of.
Potter: Good. We've got a whole tent filled with North Koreans in need of attention. They're all yours.
        Burns: (shocked) All by myself?!
Hawkeye: Don't whine, Frank. You're the humanitarian.
Burns: Oh, and what are you guys?
        B.J.: We're all-night poker players.

      • Hawkeye: Radar, you look pensive.
        Radar: No, I'm just thinking.

      • (the North Koreans stop the Jeep)
        Frank: Why have we stopped?
First North Korean: (sighs and turns to Frank) Get out!
Frank: Why? Something wrong with the jeep? Oh, don't tell me we're out of gas.
Second North Korean: We are past the check point, and we don't need you any more.
First North Korean: Besides, you're driving us crazy! And we don't need a hostage that badly. Get out!
        Burns: What do you mean?
Second North Korean: You simpleton. We are North Koreans.
Frank: Honest Injun? Don't hurt me! I'll tell you anything you wanna know!
Second North Korean: Get out of the jeep!
Frank: You're not gonna torture me, or anything?
Second North Korean: Some other time.
First North Korean: Go back to your camp. It's the best thing you can do for our side!

      • Potter: (to Dr. Paik) I'm gonna have to put you under arrest.
BJ: Come on, Colonel, you're not gonna throw away a perfectly good doctor on a technicality?
Potter: Technicality?! This man's the enemy!
Hawkeye: Enemy, schmenemy! He's a surgeon.
        BJ: And a good one.
Dr. Paik: Please, gentlemen, I knew it couldn't last. (to Potter) I just wanted to help.
Potter: Look, I understand what you were trying to do. And between you, me, and the grand piano, this wasn't a bad idea. But, damn it! I could lose my pension, wind up in the stockade.
Hawkeye: There must be some way we can keep him.
Potter: Nada. It was Houlihan and Burns who put the 'bee' on him. If they can figure it out, anybody can.

      • Hawkeye: Suppose there was a doctor who wanted to join this outfit.
Radar: Oh, heck, that's easy. All he'd have to do is, uh, get in touch with 'I' Corps and request a transfer.
BJ: Problem. This doctor is from the other side.
        Radar: Other side of what?
Hawkeye: Other side of the war.
Radar: You mean he's from Supply?
Hawkeye: No, Radar. He's North Korean.
Radar: (laughs) You guys are kidding, right? (Hawkeye and BJ look serious) Hey, that's a real problem. 'I' Corps disapproves of the enemy.

      • (Klinger walks through post-op in a nurse's outfit)
Dr. Paik: You know, I've been in combat for almost three years, but that still strikes me as a very ugly woman.
Hawkeye: You oughta see her naked. Then we'd really have to strap you down.

      • (Frank and Margaret are in Potter's tent complaining about Dr. Paik)
Potter: Why am I wasting time like this when I could be sawing wood? Let me put it this way, Burns, Houlihan?
        Margaret: Colonel?
        Frank: Yes, sir?
        Potter: Dismissed!

      • Hawkeye: (to Dr. Paik) You don't suppose your side would be interested in an exchange? We keep you and they keep Frank? Nah, they'd never go for that.

    • NOTES (2)

      • Yet another of the ubiquitous M*A*S*H episodes to feature Soon-Tek Oh. The others are "Love and Marriage" (season 3 ep 20), "The Bus" (season 4 ep 6), "The Yalu Brick Road" (season 8 ep 10), and "Foreign Affairs" (season 11 ep 3).

      • This is Robert Ito's second appearance on the series. He appeared in the second episode as Charlie Lee's henchman Lin.

    • ALLUSIONS (1)

      • Potter says Frank is as good a doctor as the next man as long as the next man is Lou Costello. Lou Costello was a comedian who worked with Bud Abbott and everything bad always happened to him in their shows and movies.
