The Long-John Flap
AIRED:
The camp suffers from the severe cold, except for Hawkeye who has received some long-johns from his father. They get passed around from person to person as a gift, a gambling stake, a trade, a bribe, stolen, given up to Father Mulcahy, who gives them to Henry, who returns them to Hawkeye as thanks for taking out his appendix.moreless

  • One of the early M*A*S*H classics. Definitely in my top three. If you like the early episodes with frat house humor, slapstick comedy and great writing then this will be one of your favorites. There isn't a weak part of this episode.moreless

This is one of my three favorite episodes. A true classic. If you are a fan of the earlier episodes then this is one of the best. The one liners between Hawkeye, Trapper and Henry are great and Frank is, as always, Frank. Can't remember who wrote this particular one but I bet it was Larry Gelbart. One of the real signs of comic genius is the ability to write jokes where people can read in between the lines. They seem almost adult but you can read them two ways - innocent or not. M*A*S*H does this a lot in the early episodes. I am always amazed that they got away with the things they did on network television in the early 70s. But, then again, All in the Family was even more controversial.moreless
  • This a comic genius of an episode.

    9.5
This is a good example of how desperate people can be to get a little warmth and how quickly they can lose it through stupidity. First, Hawkeye is so fed up with Trapper\'s guilt trip that he gives them to him. Then Trapper\'s so desperate to get even in Poker that he wagers and LOSES THEM to, as Hawkeye put so simply, \"an astigmatic missing link with four tens!\" Radar gives them up to the cook to get a leg of lamb and the cook gives them up to prevent getting busted by Frank. Frank gives them to Margaret to make sure he\'s still got someone to cuddle with at night. Margaret then loses them when Frank tells Klinger where they are. Klinger gives them to Father Mulcahy to atone for stealing them and Father Mulcahy gives them to Henry to see that a proper search is conducted for the owner. Henry jumps into them as soon as he\'s alone and is got in the act by Hawkeye and Trapper. When Henry bends over in pain, Hawk and Trap concludes he\'s got appendicitis and do surgery on him. Henry gives them back to Hawkeye as a thank you. Only this time, Hawkeye AIN\'T GIVING THEM UP! \"Oh, no! OH NO!\"moreless
  • Another classic

Everyone in camp is cold and sick except for Hawkeye, who has himmself some nice cosy long johns.

The whole episode has us following the long johns around camp as they get passed around and sold to one person after the next.

In the end Henry gives them back to Hawkeye as thanks for taking out his appendix.

    Loved every minute of it!
  • One of the best episodes of the series!

    10
This episode is one of the series true classics as it takes a relatively ordinary item ( a pair of long johns) that Hawkeye receives in the mail and sends it on an odyssey through the camp. With a backdrop of a severe cold snap, various members of the camp come into possession of the long johns only to pass it on for a variety of reasons. The only constant to many of these scenes is the sight of Hawkeye realizing that his set of long johns is being given or worn by yet another person.

A very funny episode that shows the full range of humor for the cast....moreless
  • All is cold but not Hawkeye!

    10
This episode is proberly the funniest one of all the series's episodes.

The travels of the great long johns makes it's way through the camp.

Alda(Hawkeye) is at his best comedy, in my opinion.

This is proberly my all time favorite episode of thisseries. Well written and well acted. It's great!

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Trapper is freezing and throws a notebook and parts of a stool into a stove, afterwards he closes the door of the stove. He then discusses with Hawkeye about the long johns and returns afterwards to the stove, whose door mysteriously is open again.

    • Goof: Klinger sticks up Frank for the long-johns, but Frank does not bring Klinger up on charges. This, from an officer that tried to bring charges against Hawkeye for failing to salute. Would Frank really let this incident with Klinger go by without arresting him?

    • Goof: When Frank gives Margaret the long johns, she hangs them up and just leaves them hanging up for a few minutes whilst she sits there shivering. This gives Klinger enough time to steal them. Why didn't Margaret just put them on straight away instead of sitting there shivering?

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Radar: (over the PA) Attention, attention. Here's the announcement you've all been waiting for. Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake is the proud father of a bouncing baby appendix. Henry's doing fine. (light applause in the mess tent) And the underwear has been saved! (loud cheers)
Hawkeye: (hearing the cheers over the PA) We're a hit.

    • Hawkeye: Is Henry in?
Radar: Uh-uh, some of him is. But most of it's still hangin' out.

    • (Frank is putting on the long-johns)
Trapper: Hey, look what the giant rodent has on his body.
Hawkeye: Suppurating pustules, if there's any justice.

    • (Trapper sees Hawkeye is wearing long-johns)
Trapper: Where did you get them?
Hawkeye: My father sent them to me. Right after I wrote him I'd be home for Christmas whether Truman said I could or not.

    • (Henry is dictating a letter to the Quartermaster for winter clothes for the camp)
Henry: I am wearing so many pairs of cotton drawers my thighs don't know each other anymore!
Radar: (writing) ...thighs don't know each other anymore.
Henry: Don't tell him about my thighs, Corporal!
