I used to watch this show on the Good Morning Britain breakfast TV show a lot. I even once recorded the episode where M.A.S.K. battle V.E.N.O.M. for the lost treasure of Captain Kidd.
As you know, Matt Trakker was a millionaire, or maybe a billionaire. This guy would have made Bill Gates look like a chump! Seriously, Matt had so much money, he converted an old gas station in a battlestation (Boulder Hill), complete with a sign that turned into a laser cannon. He even built the robot T-Bob, that could talk intelligently and had feelings and emotions, for his son Scott. We are still years away from most of this technology, but Matt Trakker did it all back in the 1980's. Everyone knows that billionaires like to fight crime too, just look at Batman, and so, Matt assembled the M.A.S.K team to do just that.
His nemesis, Miles Mayhem, leads up his own band of merry men, and also probably had a few dollars to toss around. But like every bad guy, Mayhem is heck bent on world domination!
What made the cartoon so cool to watch was that not every episode had the same characters in it. When Mayhem was up to something, Matt would tell his computer to pick the M.A.S.K. agents best suited for the mission, based on the agents' vehicles and expertise, and then the computer would page the selected agents. Every M.A.S.K. agent wore a special wristwatch device the beeped and flashed the M.A.S.K. logo when they were needed. Each mission had a different cast of characters, so you never knew who you were going to see in a given episode! When that pager goes off, these guys (the M.A.S.K. agents) leave whatever they are doing and run to Matt's place! In one episode, Brad Turner (the cool guy) is in the middle of playing a rock concert for tons of screaming fans, when his pager goes off. Being the loyal M.A.S.K. agent he is, Brad just throws down his guitar and runs offstage, right in mid-concert with attempting to apologize! For some strange reason, M.A.S.K. was some sort of big secret too, although wouldn't someone want to know just where the heck any of the M.A.S.K. agents had to go in such a hurry? I mean, there is only so many times you tell someone your wife went into labour before they stop believing you! But that's just me.
Nevertheless, M.A.S.K always holds a special place in my heart, right up there with G.I. Joe and Transformers. And I have the first five episodes on DVD. Don't just take my word for it about how cool it is, go and check it out!
