The contestants enter the MasterChef kitchen, and are greeted by the panel of judges: Gordon Ramsey, Joe Bastianich, and Graham Bowles. They each go their designated kitchen stations, and in front of them is a large wooden crate. For their second Mystery Box challenge, the contestants can only use the ingredients found in their box, they can't visit the pantry to get additional ingredients. The ingredients found in their box: rack of lamb, peaches, romanesco cauliflower, feta, curry spice, pomegranate molasses, fava beans, white rice, chili peppers, creme fraiche, heavy cream, tarragon, eggs, and pie crust.
The judges will only taste three dishes, and they have 1 hour to prepare their dish. Under the box the mystery ingredients: a rack of lamb, peaches, cauliflower, fresh fava beans, feta, white rice, Thai chili peppers, tarragon, creme fraiche, pie crust, heavy cream, and eggs. After the amateur chefs frantically decide what to cook, and how to cook their dishes, Gordon singles out Jennifer, saying that her dish stood out for all the wrong reasons.
The top three, as chosen by the judges: Alejandra-curried rack of lamb with peach chutney and cauliflower steak, Adrien-farmer's market lamb with cauliflower puree, Tracy: sweet and salty lamb with feta. The judges decided that Adrien was the winner of the Mystery Box challenge.
The theme of the elimination round is dessert. Adrien follows the judges into the pantry, and he gets to choose which ingredient he works with, and which ingredient the rest of the team works with, the catch being that Adrien still has a chance of being eliminated in this round. The ingredients presented to him are coffee, nuts, and pineapple. Adrien chooses nuts for himself, and coffee for the rest of the group.
The judges will be tasting everyone's dishes, although not all dishes are shown to the audience. They have 5 minutes in the pantry, and 90 minutes to cook. The contestants prepared the following: Adrien-chocolate nut torte with berry coulib, Christine- chocolate espresso mousse, Max-torte du crepes, Alejandra-black bottom coffee cream tart, Jennie-coffee infused tart with orange blossom cream, Tracy- espresso chocolate cake with coffee caramel sauce, Esther-warm coffee cheesecake, Suzy-chocolate coffee brownie with chocolate coffee truffles, Jennifer-coffee creme brulee with white chocolate and berries, and Alvin-coffee filled beignets with coffee chicory pudding.
There were a lot of contestants who did not cook their desserts all the way through, Alejandra and Jennie's desserts were raw, or unset, Christine had to scrap her original idea because her pie cups didn't turn out right, and resorted to making a mousse instead. Alvin's creation turned out to be more of a chemistry experiment rather than an entree, and this really disappointed Graham.
The top two desserts were Esther and Tracy. They are now the two team captains in the next challenge. The bottom three: Jennie, Alvin, and Max. Alvin loses, and is asked to leave the MasterChef kitchen.
