  • A generally good adaptation of the story, some vignettes in particular are strong.

The famous tale of a schoolmaster at a private school and his lifetime of service to education.

England "before the wars" has long fascinated authors, historians, and filmmakers, so it's not a surprise that ITV finally dramatised the short story "Goodbye Mr. Chips". And overall, this is a good product, though it starts slowly without time to deal effectively with the politics of the school and their impact on Chips' career. Picking up steam, the dynamic between Chips and his wife (from their meeting on holiday through their short life together) is very sentimental and entertaining.

I am puzzled that the scene of the crashing airplane takes up so much screen time in this rendition, it doesn't quite set the scene for the coming war as well as it might. And the effects of the Great War on England are not as well-marked as they could be. Of course, its the "lads" of Brookfield that Chips has taught over the years that make the story, and there is enough of that to set up a sense of nostalgia. While Chips' makeup and enfeebled accent at old age are a little cartoonish, it's hard not to feel the emotion as he "sees" his boys one last time at his retirement (I prefer this conclusion to that of the 1939 film), re-inforcing the message that it's the people rather than the accomplishments that matter the most at the end of one's life.moreless
