In later life, Gerald Durrell became well known as a writer on animals and also as owner of the Jersey Zoo, in the Channel Islands.

Gerald's brother Larry became even better known, as the novelist Lawrence Durrell.

This is the second time that Ian Hart played Dr. Watson on Masterpiece Theatre. He previously played Watson opposite Richard Roxburgh's Holmes in "The Hound of the Baskervilles."
