After a satisfying start to the series, it really took off with this incredible episode...
  • why such a low rating?

this was one of the best episodes. it deserves better ratings.

I don't think I've ever rated any tv episode a 10, but this one is deserving. The hour ran through every emotion seamlessly, both light and dark and in between, and Michael Sheen & Co. nailed it. A truly amazing hour of television that really elevated the series into Emmy worthy competition. Excellent acting, writing, and directing. Powerful, and devastatingly poignant. A true masterpiece, IMO.
  • outstanding piece of drama

This was dramatically the best episode of the season so far. Other installments have been funnier or more titillating but Michael Sheen produced one of the most honest portrayals of grief and guilt that I've ever seen. The events of this episode will stay with me for some time to come. I would say though that the scene in the operating theatre towards the end of the episode was deeply disturbing (although not gratuitously so) and should maybe be avoided if you are pregnant. Lizzie Caplan's storyline was also a very true picture of what life as a single parent can be like, when you are working full time and your kids don't understand why you are not as much fun to be around as the parent they see at the weekends. When I try to think about what other elements of the episode stood out for me, it astounds me that they managed to pack so much in without it seeming rushed or underdone. Layer upon layer of information about the relationships between the characters are being added, building into a complex whole that is truly satisfying.moreless
  • "Catherine" cements the show as one of the best of 2013

I don't usually get affected by TV shows, but throughout this episode, I had all the emotions the show wanted its viewers to have. This episode is a masterwork, and if you're not watching the show, you really should start!
