  • Unintentionally funny. don't let the Cheeziness of this first episode get you down, though. It's good underneath.

    8.0
The beginning episode of Matantei Loki Ragnarok is a little rough around the edges. It doesn't explain exactly what's happening with the characters; it's a bit vague about Loki being a god and having magic powers and being exiled, and about where exactly this storyline is going. It has cheezy moments where they dramatize everything and forms of animation that occur only in this first episode (aka, the grainy pics, which I thought were cool.)

But what can you expect in the first episode? They are toying with what works and what doesn't for the series. Granted, the starter isn't where you want to do that, but it is at least an attempt.

In this first episode, gain the 3 main characters that are needed; Mayura, Loki, and Yamino. it sets a base for characters to grow out from, which comes in handy later in the series. It also characterizes Mayura well and gives Loki the strange behavior that is not-quite-childlike. Viewers can sense that there's more than meets the eye about this pint sized detective even before the halfway point in the episode.

It was fairly good for a beginning show, and even though it is rough around the edges, it has some great promise.moreless
  • The first exciting episode of Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok.

    8.8
I love this show. It has a great mix of Norse mythology and Japanese culture. In this episode you are introduced to the main characters: Loki (Norse god of mischief trapped in a child's body), Yamino (Loki's assistant), and Mayura (a detective/mystery loving young girl). Although this episode didn't get into any of the Norse mythology, it did start the series in an interesting and exciting way.

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The old woman that Yamino and Loki talk to say that her mistress-who died in a fire-used to always carry around a doll. (specifically, the doll that Mayura found). she claims the doll never left the mistress's sight. However, if the mistress [who remains unnamed] died in a fire, then shouldn't the doll have burn marks, at least? And what was it doing in the clock tower, if it never left the girl's sight?

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Mayura: I need you to help me find something.
      Loki: What sort of something?
      Mayura: It's a... a doll.
      Loki: A doll?
Mayura: (laughs) not your every day run of the mill type doll, silly goose! This doll laughs and flies and she calls me her sister. She's super cute. She's got big eyes like yours... hey, your eyes ARE big! and look how cute... (continues to ramble)
Loki: Yamino, please see this young lady out.

    • Yamino: (singing and digging) As long as it's for Master Loki, I reply, 'Okie-dokie!' Heave-ho!

  • NOTES (3)

    • Original Japanese Name: Matantei, Toujou!

    • Matantei Loki Ragnarok, in the English Dub, is translated over to "Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok".

    • In the beginning of the episode, it's raining and can see Loki's shadow. When lightning flashes, his shadow grows taller, then lightning flashes again and everything goes back to normal. This is probably foreshadowing, hinting that Loki isn't as he appears to be.
