Though it was hinted at in the pilot, here we start the trend of Matlock's daughter/female assistant falling for a man who could be the perpetrator of the crime of the week. We've got Matlock interrupting a breakfast in bed and dealing with his daughter's social life while he's defending a maid on a murder charge. It was still novel here, but it happens more and more as the series goes on and becomes a crutch for the writers to fall back on.
Aside from seeing the voice of the animated Batman - Kevin Conroy - in a live action role, "The Affair" is a pretty weak episode. We don't even see the ultimately guilty party on screen until the 3/4 mark and the story is too rushed to properly address all of the issues it raises. A few good moments (the scene where Matlock is hired, and his continued annoyance of the older aunt in the mansion where he's staying) don't make up for a very weak mystery.
