The opening credits show the title as Hostage but the end credits show the title to be Hostage!. That closing exclamation point causes this episode to be erroneously listed many places with the exclamation point added.
Guest star Don Durant sings the song Cindy in this episode. Durant actually tested for the role of Bart Maverick. He was given the role of Jody Collins here as a partial consolation prize when Jack Kelly was cast as Bart instead. Rod Taylor and Stuart Whitman were also considered for the role.
Bret: How's your thousand dollar bill, still pinned to your pocket?
Bart: You think I'd a worked my way downriver if I still had it? From the looks of this place, I'd say you parted with yours, too.
(Bart is being beaten at the police station by Inspector Marvin)
Bart: Look, Inspector, I know this case is mighty important to you. You get that girl back, and Devereaux's your friend for life. He might even make you chief of police. But I don't trust you as far as I could throw you, which I'd truly enjoy doing.
Bart: So you're all broke?
Bret: Only for the moment, Bart, only for the moment.
Bart (about the kidnappers): They're not the smartest boys in the world, Inspector. That's why they're so dangerous.
Pappyism: Never hold a kicker and never draw to an inside straight.
Jack Kelly, appearing as Bart Maverick for the first time in this episode, originally signed for a one shot guest star role but his on-screen chemistry with James Garner was so good that the producers decided to make Bart Maverick a continuing character. Kelly would go on to be the only actor to appear in all five seasons of the series' run. In all, he appeared in 75 episodes, James Garner (who left the show to make movies) appeared in 52, and Roger Moore appeared in only 15.
