  • Bret finds mystery and tragedy in the Western range wars.

Bret falls for a beautiful and mysterious widow with a terrible secret. This episode is notable for its serious tone, even among these earlier episodes. It takes a number of surprising twists, which makes reviewing it without major spoilers a little hard! The backdrop is the Western "range wars" between cattle men and farmers, which pits Margaret Ross against an evil cattle baron, with Bret caught up in the middle, as usual. Margaret is an interesting, well-written character, and the plot will keep you guessing right up to the end. The one major flaw is that Bret apparently makes a miraculous recovery from what was supposed to be a life-threatening wound in order to ride off on his horse in the end.
