      • Tess's Letter to Charlotte...

        Dear Charlotte,

My darling most adorable niece, there's a lot of things about life your mum won't tell you. Never ever wear black stockings with white shoes. Same for black bras under white tops. And if that whole bra on the outside trend comes back, ignore it. I may not be around to tell you this later, so I'm writing it down now. Blending eye shadow may not be Claire's strong point, but there's a lot you will learn from her. She's the best rider in the world. I've always said she's really half horse. And there's nothing she doesn't know about running a property.

You didn't get to choose your mum, the way she didn't get to choose me for her sister. I know she wouldn't have picked someone who thought good coffee and incense were important, which, I'm telling you now, they are. She'd have wanted someone like her, someone who could ride and shoot and rope from the day they were born. But people come into your life for a reason. Even if it's not always clear what that is. I hope you're lucky enough to have a sister too, Charlotte, and that she's like Claire, so you'll always know she'll be there for you, whenever you need her, no matter what.

Because things will come at you in life, and you'll need special people around you to help face them, so don't get sucked in by the show-offs or the smooth talkers. It's the quiet ones, who watch and listen and care, that you need to look out for. And if you find one, don't ever let them go. Not even when you're afraid of where it might take you, when you're scared of what you really might feel if you let yourself. You have to be brave, because you don't get much time and you don't get many chances to find someone who will respect you, listen to you, and love you completely for who you are. And if you don't believe this, ask your mother, because she's been lucky enough to find that person.

I wish you and your mother everything in the world. Happiness, love and laughter. Especially laughter.

        Love and kisses,

        Your Auntie Tess
