Thats like asking what was the point of making Joanie Loves Chachi, Homeboys in Outer Space and Woops! The answer to that question might possibly drive you INSANE !! LOL!

Go ahead and read this... its one possibly explanation of the questions you pose:

I am normally a defender of shows that are much maligned, especially those whose apparent lack of quality is largely dogmatic (such as My Mother The Car), and which are maligned by people who have either never seen the show, or whose opinions of it are formed largely by the show's reputation. Defending this one is a little harder. TV Land aired a few episodes during the late 1990s, and it made me wonder why I watched it as a boy. It must have been because of the chimp. But then, it was in production at the same time (early 70s) as Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp, which I also used to watch, and which was intended exclusively for children.

From what I remember, The Hathaways had much better chimp acting.

Some shows are unfairly maligned and play better than their reputations when viewed today. Me and the Chimp is not one of those shows. Its reality is as bad as its reputation. A truly awful sitcom that made pablum like Bosom Buiddies and The Chicago Teddy Bear look like classic television.

In retrospect, I think I was being too hard on the show. Like I've said about some other shows, like My Mother The Car, it wasn't the Citizen Kane of sitcoms, but it wasn't tasteless either. I doubt that I would enjoy it much today, but I did enjoy it as a kid, and it's fine if thought of as a kids' show. It was at least wholesome, which is more than can be said of many shows today that are targeted toward youth, so why pick on it?
