Medici: Godfathers of the Renaissance is a documentary series on PBS that tells the dramatic story of the Italian Medici family and their influence on the Renaissance and Western history. The Medici family was an important group of donors, philanthropists and benefactors that helped financed some of the most important works that propelled the European Renaissance. They helped fund the works of some of the greatest thinkers, artists and engineers in history. The documentary visits Florence, Italy, the birthplace of the European Renaissance and home of the Medici family.The series is shot beautifully on 16mm film and goes on location to the various courts, cathedrals and palaces where history was made. The narrative presented in the series weaves greed, desire, pride and murder as the driving force behind such works as the great dome of Florence, the "Birth of Venus," Michelangelo's "David," Martin Luther's Reformation and Galileo's attack on the Church and the universe.
