  • TGIS: Thank God it's Saturday!

All I can say is that I for one was not bored by the repetition. The repetition underscored how infinitely variable life can be. Witnessing the subtle variations unfold each day was utterly fascinating. I felt the same way about Groundhog Day.

Groundhog Day of course had an entirely different plot/theme. It was a metaphor for samsara as a necessary prelude to moksha. It was a metaphor the requirement that we "do it over until we get it "Be Kind, Rewind" was not nearly so ambitious. It was however equally entertaining.

That said, living through those three consecutive Fridays was an emotional roller coaster. So when Saturday finally rolled around, I must admit my reaction was "Thank God it's Saturday!"

Nice that poor neglected Joe DuBois finally got to release some endorphines.

Did he mention that endorphines make you happy?moreless
  • great episode

Allison dreams about something horrible, when she wakes up she ends up living through the same day again. Just as she finishes the day, she wakes up again in the morning as if the day before never happened. She gets taken to the same incident that's about to happen in the day. It's a really cool storyline. It never gets boring, so much is shown throughout the episode, and it never slows down. The suspense keeps you wondering of what's happening. All the characters play nice parts throughout the episode, it's really fun to watch. I just can't wait for the next episode.moreless
  • Allison in a car crash.

Crash, boom, bang! And then Allison is in a hospital bed, but on the bright side, the other car was driving around with a dead body in the trunk. Hah, coincidence? I don not think so. She freaks out and it was just a nightmare. But things tend to happen when Allison's dreaming is in the picture. It's just too weird, and Joe's talk about the endorfines. He's such a lovesick puppy, lol! And when she starts "living", everything happens like she dreamt. She has already lived this day, and Joe is surprised as always when Allison start babling. So that's that.moreless
  • We have a re-run of Groundhog Day that just goes on and on!

This series is very well written and the family unit is touching and witty but this episode just got boring as it went on... and on ... I know there was an supposed idea of suspense as to how things were going to be fixed and the initial scene when Allison looks down and she has lost her legs was very fine writing and acting ... but then it just got old. And in the end you just wanted to say to Joe - get over your endorphins!! Ariel did a convinving role as the troublesome daughter but in this episode I thought Bridgette just overacted. Thankfully Detective Scanlon is so hot you can gloss over his scepticism about Allison's dreams!

I know there have been better episodes and there certainly will again be more in the future - I just felt that this time Groundhog has been done to death!!moreless
  • Denzel Washing I may have not seen your Deja Vue movie yet but I bet it doesn\'t hold a candle to what this woman had to go through in one hour!moreless

This is so great! You know sometimes you can tell what is a dream other times you can\'t. I mean I think everyone wish just once they could live the day over and have chance to make it better, but boy can you imange having to live it three times? I would be pretty **** myself if I had life the same day that many times! Ariel did a good job in every take of the \"DAY\" and what I am liking his we are startign to see more of Maire the youngest not just the older two. Oh and Joe little talk of Endorphs has been repeating in my head since Wednesday night so much everyone time I see one of my Top Ten Animated guys espically two guys I get for the price of one My endorph have been up very high! So good acting great story can\'t wait for next week for the ghost who will not die!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Goof: This episode appears to have aired out of order. In Four Dreams DiNovi hurts Detective Scanlon and he does not answer her phone calls. In this episode he has a lunch date with her. In Ghost in the Machine he appears to still be hurt and would like to avoid her.

    • Goof: When Allison is in the car crash the front of the car is facing away from the Judge's car, yet when she looks up and straight ahead she looks at the dead body in the trunk of the car.

  • QUOTES (13)

    • Devalos: Wait a second here, I have an idea. It might even be legal.

    • Allison: (to Ariel) Here, watch this. (picks up ringing phone, yells at telemarketer) NO. No no NO! No, you listen to me, you scum-sucking, bottom-feeding, hide-behind-the-telephone-headset piece of garbage. You EVER call my house again during breakfast, I will personally come to your carpet cleaning company, I will find you, and I will hurt you, and when I'm finished with you, nothing and no-one will ever be able to get YOUR stain out. (hangs up phone) Ok, you get the gist?

    • Allison: And you gotta get yourself a little bit of bad-ass.
      Ariel: Mom!
      Joe: Allison!
Allison: You know what I'm saying, don't pretend you don't know what I'm saying. Bad-ass. Bad-ass! BAD-ASS!! You gotta get yourself a little attitude, Ariel DuBois. You gotta give it to that girl.

    • Ariel: Mom...
Allison: I know all about it, you're hot, she's not. You're not staying home from school 'cause there's some bully. The girl's got you completely intimidated and that's crazy! You know what you have to do? Intimidate HER.

    • Bridgette: Guess what!
Allison: Ariel doesn't wanna go to school today.
      Bridgette: (dumbfounded) How...?!
Allison: (fakes triumphant laugh) Ha-Ha-Ha HAA HAA!

    • Joe: Cool. The kids don't get up for another ten minutes.
Allison: Oh, man. I so believed what I was dreaming. (sighs) I'm so relieved. I feel like I ... I got the ultimate do-over. Like the universe gave me a get-out-of-jail-free card. (chuckles)
Joe: Um, well, did you use that card yet? Because I was thinking that, if you're still in jail, I could really go for a conjugal visit. (Allison stares daggers at him) Come on. Don't look at me that way. Let me explain something to you. Sex isn't just sex. Sex is good for you. Sex releases endorphins. And endorphins make you happy. And right now, you look like you could use a little happiness. I sure know I could.

    • (Waking from a dream, Allison grunts.)
Joe: You okay? Everything all right?
Allison: Mm-hmmm. I'm fine; I just had a dream. (Allison sighs; Joe grunts rhythmically.)
      Allison: What are you doing?
Joe: You know what I'm doing.
Allison: Well, I don't feel like doing that right now.
Joe: That's okay, I'll do all the work. (Allison turns around and stares at Joe. Joe chuckles.) That ... that is not the look of love.
      Allison: What's your problem?
Joe: What are you talking about? I don't have a problem, I just ... I just figured that you're up and I'm up ...
      Allison: I know.
      Joe: It's been awhile.
Allison: Well, I'm not going to forget how to do it. It's just I'm tired honey. I'm cranky.
      Joe: Yeah ...
      Allison: Tomorrow. I promise tomorrow.
Joe: Yeah, you say that, but it's a vicious cycle. Let me explain something to you. Sex isn't just sex. Sex is good for you, 'cause sex releases endorphins. And endorphins make you happy.
Allison: Mmmmm. Yes, I know that, I do. And I fully plan on being happy tomorrow, whether I feel like it or not.

    • Allison: (to Joe) No, let me explain something to you. Sex isn't just sex. Sex is good for you. Sex releases endorphins. Endorphins make you happy.

    • Allison and Joe: (in unison) I feel a hackneyed phrase coming on. Wait. It passed.

    • Allison: This is the exact same day.
Telephone Salesman: Is that a yes? Because for $19.95, we will send over a man to clean your carpet...
      (Allison hangs up the phone)

    • Bridgette: What's an arraignment?
Allison: Why do you want to know what an arraignment is? You're only eight.
      Bridgette: I don't know.

    • Allison: (being sarcastic) It's turning out to be a wonderful day.
Joe: Don't blame me. I offered. You passed.

    • Joe: Sounds like it's going to be a rough morning. Don't you wish you had some endorphins right now?

The events of "Be Kind, Rewind" are similar in nature to the movie Groundhog Day and the FOX TV show Tru Calling. Groundhog Day is an often-referenced film in which the main character, Phil Connors (Bill Murray), a weatherman, lives the same day over-and-over. In Tru Calling, the main character Tru Davies relived days for the specific purpose of saving lives. Dead bodies would ask her to help them and her day would actually "rewind." In at least a couple episodes of that program, Tru relived the same day more than once.

Finally, the ABC series Day Break, premiered not long before the original NBC broadcast of this episode, features a similar premise.
