  • An unusual installment of Medium. This episode seemed to be missing something important...

    I need to start out by saying that Medium is my favorite show. It is the highest quality program that is being sent to our television sets today, and no matter what I say about this episode, it does not affect my obsession level for this show.

    This episode had both good and bad qualities in my opinion. A positive point that needs to be made about this episode is that they finally re-touched upon Devalos' health problems. In the first episode of the season we learned that our favorite D.A. has diabetes. Here, we see him all sweaty from a morning jog. He says that he's afraid that if he doesn't get in shape he thinks he will die ten years before he should. Besides that, a few nice lines, and The Rolling Stones' Sympathy for the Devil, this show had no positives.

    First off, did anyone but me miss three significant characters from this installment--namely Ariel, Bridgette, and Marie?! Even though their names are in the opening credits, they never make an appearance. I look forward to seeing them, and when I didn't, it made me mad. And, that of course meant there was no "B" story!!!

    Then there was the crime. I must say, I had this one figured out pretty quickly--faster than usual for this show. I wish they could have maybe put in another plot twist, maybe that would have helped. After hearing the boy scream for help and just having her find the skeleton, that bothered me.

    Another point that must be made is with Allison find the skeleton in the "living caves." Did anybody else feel like the whole scene with her looking for him a little strange for the show? They used some kind of yellow filer and just made the whole bit seem fake. This show is so good with the realism, why mess with a good thing and actually make me notice I am watching a television show?

    Errg. This episode annoys me. What were the writers thinking? How could they think that leaving out the essential family story and giving us a substandard crime was alright? And don't even start me with the ending I would have given this episode a lower score, but since this show is usually awesome, I think I'll give them a break.moreless

  • I found this episode to be very poor for Medium standards. Medium is one of my favorite shows, yet this somehow seemed to be one of the most boring and poorly written episodes of all. I figured out the ending before Allison did and I'm not even psychic!moreless

    Around the time that the killer admitted he knew the young boy in school because he was a few years older than him, it all clicked with me. He was a few years older... The kid in the dreams looked a few years older... He never needed to say his name in the dream for me to put two and two together and realize he's the same guy. So Allison figured this all out some time after I did, and that was rather disappointing to me.

    There was also a lack of other content going on in this show. No real B Plot or anything going on with the husband or girls. It was just this one storyline that I pretty much solved before the ending. Usually I don't pick up on things like this, but if I could have seen it before Allison-- if it was that predictable to me-- than I don't think it really should have made air.moreless

  • This was a bad Episode and should be reflected as such in the score. Medium is a great series, but scoring this episode 6.0 and 7.1, based on the overall series and past performance undermines the relevance of individual scores.moreless

    Diane Ademu-John, the writer, did a poor job on this one and that is rightly acknowledged. However, it is worth noting that she also wrote Episodes S.O.S and Death Takes A Policy, which were two of the BEST episodes in Season 2.
    If any production houses actully take their critics reviews into account, then they can only be guided by accurate reviews and scoring and make good decisions based on viewer reaction. Biased scoring is ultimately counter productive and could even promote weak storylines in the future.moreless

    Allison is brought to the scene of the crime by DA Devalos so she can see the body of the dead assembly man who happens to be a well respected public servant. But as soon as Allison gets there she gets a vibe that that death of the assembly man was a natural death. It's even proven when forensics discover that foul play was to blame for the death. While the investigation is going on, allison dreams up of a boy in a cave calling for help. It's a really interesting episode, things happen in it. I really enjoyed watching this one. The paranormal stuff was well directed and well written.moreless

    I know quite a few people didn't like this episode and whilst it's not the best one out there, it's far from the worst, and it does for once centre on the crime solving part of Alison persona rather than being constantly bogged down in family problems, which can become grating when overused as it has been recently

    The song playing in the background as Alison experiences another of her dreams should have been a give-away to the direction this episode would be taking, but once again Medium manages a pretty sleight of hand that seems so obvious towards the end but which you never quite catch as it is unfolding in front of you. This time around it is the death of an Assemblyman, Henry Rieckhoff which appears to be a suicide and which his image conscious widow would like to be swept under the rug. Initially willing to aid in the cover up due to the Assemblyman's years of service and dedication to the community, Alison soon begins having seemingly unrelated visions of a boy trapped in a cave, begging for someone to save him. With her normal dogged determination she convinces DA Sandoval and Detective Scanlon to dig a little deeper and uncovers the fact that although the Rieckhoff appears to have died as a result of a badly planned auto-asphyxia whilst watching internet porn he was also taking a drug designed to cancel his libido, which points towards a more suspicious death than had previously been considered. When confronted with this information Mrs Rieckhoff admits she knew about the drug and why he was talking it, as he had a prodigious appetite for sex and had all during there early years, however something had happened years ago which changed her husband, he began taking the drug to quell his appetites and they had had a wonderful relationship since. Meanwhile Alison trudges up to a national park and finds the cave with missing child, only to discover his bones, he's been dead for 15 years. Her next dream connects the Assemblyman and the boy in a compromising position and finally all the pieces fall into place. Now they just have to prove it, and in the final vision the dead Assemblyman gives them what they need from beyond the grave.moreless
