  • QUOTES (20)

    • Emilia Fox: Morgause is the character that I'm playing and she arrives at the castle in some disguise and surprises the court and issues a challenge to Arthur. I've never done the full chain mail and all that so that was really fun. I really wanted to create that fairytale image of when you do see her: she has got the long blonde hair.

    • Katie McGrath: (About Morgause) She a very powerful sorceress, she is a warrior, she is intelligent, she is forceful, she is very similar to Morgana and she would be what Morgana would have been had she been brought up in the same way, they are very similar characters. She comes to Camelot not only to destroy Uther because Uther has killed so many of her kind but also to re-establish, or to establish because they've never actually met, the bond between her and Morgana, her half-sister because they are the only family that each other have left.

    • Emilia Fox: (About her experience in Merlin) It's been great, it's been all the things that I've always wanted to do which is sword fighting, riding he most sort of fairy tale horse that you can imagine and spell incantation. Reminds me of my English accent days at University where you have to learn it really like a formula but that was fun to do.

    • Johnny Capps: We were two thirds into the series and we wanted to give another emotional challenge to Arthur and we thought it'd be interesting that we set up this idea in series one that Arthur was born of magic [episode 1x09 Excalibur] so it's a great ticking time bomb that we wanted to explore at some point in series and so we thought it'd be a great idea to introduce Ygraine, the ghost of Arthur's mother, and for him to learn about it in an emotional sense. We could have wrote a dry scene where Merlin tells him or somebody tells him but we thought why don't we make it an emotional story so Arthur actually gets to meet his mother.

    • Johnny Capps: (About episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) Arthur learns more about his father and learns more of what's happened to his mother.

    • Alice Patten: (About what Ygraine discloses to her son) So it works out as if Uther is the beast why his wife Ygraine died so Arthur is horrified and frightened by this so the repercussion is huge for what she says.

    • Johnny Capps: (About episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) The idea came, we had a meal with Tony Head [Anthony Head] after series 1 and we were saying what direction we wanted to take Uther in and Tony was like saying I'd really love a scene where Arthur really challenges me. The story sort of rippled down from that really.

    • Bradley James: (About episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) Anthony [Head]gets to pick up a sword and defend himself and it was great.

    • Andreas Petrides: (About the sword fight between Arthur and Uther in episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) I'm in charge of all the action really so anything that involves action I just plan it, make sure it's safe, overlook all what we do. They guys have got to get used to work on each other after we do a few takes they get used to how each other moves and how the fight works, they got quite comfortable with each other, they got used the routine and it started to work out well.

    • Johnny Capps: (About the sword fight between Arthur and Uther in episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) As a producer you are always having kittens thinking of the props, are they gonna be alright but Bradley [James] is great with a sword and Tony's [Anthony Head] got a lot of experience doing fighting so they were very, very good and Andreas [Petrides], the stunt coordinator, did a great fight with them.

    • Andreas Petrides: (About the sword fight between Arthur and Uther in episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) Arthur is obviously fighting against Uther so it's dad and son so there's quite a lot of that drama side in it involving the fight.

    • Johnny Capps: (About the sword fight between Arthur and Uther in episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) It was a real thrill to watch because you've built up to this emotional moment that Arthur is a product of magic and how his character would feel about that, he is questioning everything all of the morals that his dad has laid down so this is a young man in absolute crisis.

    • Bradley James: (About the sword fight between Arthur and Uther in episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) It was great to get the fight scene going in the council chambers cause we talked about it all last year and how good it would be and I think the idea kind of spread and if found itself in the script.

    • Johnny Capps: (About the sword fight between Arthur and Uther in episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) We broke it down into three quite easy stages so we just shot either side and then across the set and they did a brilliantly, and I think it was very exciting when they had to kind of stand back cause the swords were flying everywhere.

    • Julian Murphy: (About the sword fight between Arthur and Uther in episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) It's a very difficult scene on two levels. Any sword fight is tough, especially if they are fighting without shields or armour which they are in this case and then add to that the fact that they are performing very emotional, difficult lines.

    • Anthony Head: (About the sword fight between Arthur and Uther in episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) The thing that was quite fun about it was the fact that he was coming at me, he wants me to fight back and I won't in this case and then he annoys me so I actually do try to get him back so the fight has got a shape and a some sort of a dynamic to it which is not usual.

    • Julian Murphy: Fighting with those swords is, yes they are blunt obviously they are not sharp, but they are still big heavy lumps of metal and they are still thrown in a fair degree of earnest and you really can't afford to get it wrong because otherwise the sword would come straight into you.

    • Anthony Head: It increases the element of danger. You should be able to see it when you are watching it.

    • Bradley James: (About the sword fight between Arthur and Uther in episode 2x08 The Sins of the Father) I think will come as quite a surprise to the audience that the episode kind of culminates in this scene.

    • Anthony Head: There's still a back story that we have yet to find out towards the end of the season we find there is much more that meets the eye to Arthur's relationship with Uther, Ygraine, Morgana, Morgause and therefore more would be discovered in season three.
