I loved the episode, easily my favourite series opener so far

However, I think the trailer for the next episode and some of the stuff in this episode kind of gives away how it will be resolved. Alas.

When Morgana KO'd those knights I went into total fanboy mode though

No you weren't the only one. I don't believe that dream scene is going to be anything we will ever see. Isn't that the final battle in which Mordred kills Arthur.

I wonder if Leon has passed on his immortal gift to Elyan... It's funny (not!) how it's always the knights we don't know who die when those we do know and like are the only survivors...

And Lancelot would have been on the wrong side to mount his horse if he had tried. Well, he was on the side Gwen was coming from

I agree, Connor. The preview is a giveaway but I love it that Merlin's magic isn't working for once.

I've just begun watching it so I'll definitely be back later with more comments, but may I just say, they FINALLY changed it to "shoulders of a young man!!!" I'm so happy. :3

Ah ha, Elodie, I was so enthralled by the subtle changes to the "start" bit with the close-up of Merlin's eye that I totally forgot to check the boy/man thing...

You'll notice Arthur calls Merlin a man too

Sometimes there's nothing more damaging than high expectations.

Fortunately that didn't cause a problem for me; they had me when they called Merlin a 'young man' in the opening.

I can't comment on the HD side of things yet because we don't get BBC HD but visually it still looked improved from previous series even in SD (or maybe that's 'cause it's being so long since I watched it through the tv).

I plan to rewatch when it's finished downloading from iPlayer so I might make some constructive comments later -- or not, as I'm terrible at reviewing stuff I might just generally agree with what's already been said instead ... except about the horse-mounting because I'm very unobservant and clueless with horsey-related stuff.

Anyway I loved this episode and next Saturday can't come quick enough.

@boom-moo, didn't like the trailer for next weeks episode totally takes the tension away of the consquences of Merlin getting himself caught by the Dorocha, I know he is going to survive but to see him standing and walking just after what seems like a mortal injury is a bit daft on the side of the makers.

I think I canarticulatemy feelings about this episode but with one word, underwhelming.

Yeah, despite he is seen carried by Percival it is clear that he is gonna make it. I mean, there's now way that the main character is gonna die but still they could have been a bit more subtle putting the preview together.

I enjoyed the episode. It really does have a much darker, mature feel about it - genuinely quite scary in parts. It was good to see the relationship between Merlin and Arthur develop. I wonder if we will get to hear the speech that Merlin has written? Seeing Uther in that condition was just sad, but Anthony did it brilliantly. I was happy with the portrayal of Lancelot - selfless and noble. He looked surprised and pleased that Gwen approached him, which suggests that there hasn't been much interaction between them in the intervening year. I agree that what happens in episode 2 has been well signposted.

    Anyway, back to I-player.

    See you later

Forgot to mention that I love how we got to see bits of the castle we haven't seen before like the kitchen. It kind of makes it more real as a living place, not just a beautiful setting.

Love Morgana's new look and Gwen's new dresses.
In Morgana's dream, if it was when Mordred kills Arthur did they show Excalibur near Arthur's dead body?

Lol, just realized that the speech delivered by Arthur at the banquet must have been Merlin's. Not that we heard much of it though.

I'm not sure it was (the final battle). It struck me that all the banners weren't the Camelot ones. There was a sword that indeed looked a bit like Excalibur (although I'm not sure it was, I'm no expert). I'll need to check exactly what the banners represented. Albion maybe? Or Morgana's own army? And would Merlin still be hear talking to Morgana if Arthur had been killed? I'm not convinced. Remember TPTB do take some liberty with the legend...

I think it's the first time we've seen those banners. They didn't look familiar to me at all.

I thought the banners were Camelot's and the Bloodguards. Morgana's hand was aged also.
