    Episode 5x12 Lives Saved list:
    -Gwaine saves Merlin’s life.
    -Balinor saves Merlin’s life.

    What Arthur calls Merlin:
-Worst servant in the history of the world.
    -Coward (implied).

    What Merlin calls Arthur:
    -Nothing.

    Times Sir Leon says “Sire”:
    -4.

Arthur's attributes to being the great king of legend:
-He drops by the tavern and plays dice with his servant and mingles with his people.
-He listens to everyone in the Round Table meeting before making a decision.
-He won't forsake Camelot people by taking refuge within the citadel and wait for Morgana’s attack because he’s vowed to protect them all.
-Even if outnumbered he decides to ride and meet Morgana’s army because it is his duty as protector of his land. He can’t stand and let Camelot citizens be slaughtered. Those are not the values that Camelot was built on. Whatever the outcome of the battle, he won’t let Morgana or himself desecrate those values.
-He trusts in his knights’ knowledge and opinion to draw tactics.
-He is impressed with Merlin’s work.
-He never meant any of his jokes about Merlin being a coward. He has actually always thought that he was the bravest man he ever met.
-He isn’t convinced about Merlin’s reason for not joining them at Camlann.
-He decides on a life or death tactic as their only chance to succeed. He is conscious that there’s no escape for either faction.
-He considers the possibility that Leon’s plan to make their stand at Camelot might have been a better idea.
-He finds comfort and strength in Gwen’s reassurance.
-He goes with this gut and follow’s Merlin’s warning as per his ‘dream’.
-He knows how to rally his men into battle: ‘Tonight... we do battle. Tonight, we end this war. We end a war as old as the land itself. A war against tyranny... and greed... and spite. Not all will greet the dawn. Some will live. Some will die. But each and every one of you fights with honour... and with pride. For not only do we fight for our lives... we fight for the future. The future of Camelot. The future of Albion. The future of the united kingdoms! For the love of Camelot!’
-All his men follow him into battle without question.

Arthur is knocked unconscious or prevented from knowing about Merlin's magic:
-He is not attentive enough when Merlin cheats during the dice game.

    What Arthur says about magic:
    -Nothing.

    Potions made by Gaius:
-One, but it is not mentioned what for.

    Gaius's smacks:
    -None.

'I have faith Arthur makes a great king' statements:
-Merlin: This battle is the only way he knows how to save his people. If he's going to lose his life, he will still go.
-Gwen: Your plan is brave. And bold. And our only chance to defeat Morgana once and for all. I have never for a moment doubted the valour and the wisdom of this choice.

    Merlin and Great Dragon meetings:
    -None.

    Great Dragon's riddles:
    -None.

    Aithusa meetings:
-Morgana (5 so far) and -Mordred (2 so far) where Aithusa coats a sword on his breath.

    Morgana's premonitory dreams:
    -None.

    Morgana's smirks of doom:
    -None.

    Arthur and Gwen moments:
-She sits to Arthur’s left at the Round Table and her voice is heard like everyone else’s.
-She insists in joining Arthur on his way to the battlefield. He thinks it’s not the appropriate place for a Queen but she insists because she’d rather spend which could be Arthur’s last days together than sit waiting.
-Gwen knows that Arthur doesn’t believe Merlin’s excuse not to join them in Camlann.
-Gwen reassures Arthur about his brave plan to try and defeat Morgana, never for a moment doubting the valour and the wisdom of his choice.
-‘If you do not doubt me, Guinevere, then I do not doubt myself. And that gives me a strength greater than any weapon’.
-They hold hands, she kisses him on the cheek and they join in a tight hug.
-He carries her in his arms to bed.
-They sleep close together, Gwen snuggling against his chest.

I really liked the ending, good thing i dont have to wait until next saturday for the finale! I couldnt help notice the staff he somehow managed to get from a cave with nothing but rocks and crystals. Anyone have any ideas what the staff is supposed to mean? Last time i saw merlin with a staff i think was the one he stole from the she and made them explode

Does anyone else think that if Arthur had had the time to stop and think, he might have figured out Merlin had magic when he spoke to him from the Crystal Cave? Or at least that he was using magic.

I thought this episode was fantastic. I really like the Dragoon character. I always do a little cheer when Merlin steps out as Dragoon.

But I do hope there is an actual magic reveal next episode.

Yeah he might, let alone if he reflects on events of the past and starts to put 2 and 2 together, but knowing Arthur he would probably dismiss it as some kind of hunch.

    Episode 5x12 magic and spells:
-Ari extinguishes some flames using a spell.
-Morgana makes the Gean Canach (giant slug) remove his magic from Ari using a spell.

Also, Merlin better go get Excalibur. There have been too many times when I wondered when he would give that to Arthur!

I'm confused, is there a 13th ep or was that the last? I'm guessing there is since this one was labeled as part 1?

Arthur was yielding Excalibur during this episode I guess that Merlin made sure that he would take it when he laid out his stuff for him.

There's a 13th (and last ever) episode airing on Monday December 24th

Aww just when i thought Gwaine got a girlfriend..

    traitor's cape

This episode was so intense!! Merlin talking to Arthur in sleep was so awesome! I wonder if Gwen felt any jelousy, just imagine your husband waking up and yelling out his best friend's name and running off without any care of you whatsoever

Anyone else noticed that, or actually why, Mordred's sword of dragon's breath had no markings on it? Does it have any importance , was it incomplete somehow?

I was a bit disappointed in the ending though, unless Merlin didn't want to shock Arthur and the rest i see no point turning into an old man.

Well, now that I've finally managed to watch the whole episode (no thanks to poky videos), all I can say is ...

    Oh ... my ... gosh.

Very well done indeed. Everything about this episode - Arthur's speech just before the night battle, Merlin's journey to the cave, Balinor's appearance, Merlin and Morgana's confrontation - the TPTB really pulled the stops out. And the ending ... oh man.

The preview for Part II looks even more awesome. Merlin calling down lighting? That's something not seen since "Le Morte D' Arthur." And the creepy red sky from Morgana's vision ...Though it seems as if there's a lull between the first night attack and the final battle since Morgana is shown on her throne. I really hope Arthur finds out about Merlin before the end.

    Two more days!

According to Balinor, the heart of the Crystal Cave will reveal Merlin’s true self and he will be wielding a power he can not yet conceive of. I think that when he comes out of the cave as Old Merlin (for the first time ageing up without the help of a potion) it's because he is old for real and hence able to wield those amazing powers that he can not master or conceive of as a young man.

Oh so that's why : ) Thanks for explaining.
Although it is funny that old body can withstand greater powers than a younger body, it reality it should be the opposite, Merlin is not that young in season 5 anymore either though, (i read in some older topic he was 32? i might have misunderstood though). I guess it was good idea of them to keep Merlin's identity for a secret for a bit longer. Fiction is fiction i guess : )

That's how I interpret Balinor's words, XyFan. I might be wrong but the fact that no potion is needed and also a spoiler (coming from TPTB) saying that we would see the real Old Merlin makes me reach that conclusion.

I have no clue how he is going to revert back though. Maybe now he is able to do it whenever he wishes to.

I loved it! This was such an exciting and intense episode!

I like that Mordred questioned robbing Ari of his magic.

The tavern scenes were really fun. Though I don't see how Arthur didn't see Merlin using magic then. LOL Merlin tripped over the chair when trying to be stealthy. There were some quite funny moments in this episode.

Poor Merlin! He seemed quite dazed after he lost his magic. He really doesn't know how to act without it. It was very sad to hear him scream like that, desperate and frustrated with the situation. We very rarely see him lose his cool.

Gwaine & Eira was cute if a bit sudden. Wow they already slept together, I'm surprised they showed them in bed together undressed so quickly in this show. She was annoying late though.

Because the round table scene was so long this time it was especially sad to see Merlin excluded. He didn't even speak, just relegated to the background. Even when they were all along and there weren't any others that the would have to be proper in front of he still stood in the background and said nothing. They never even asked him or ever really looked at him.

How did Aithusa know how to enchant the sword. Does it just come naturally to dragons? Is it bad that I sort of hope Mordred kills Morgana with that sword she gave him?

I really liked the Gaius and Merlin scenes.

Aww the Arthur and Merlin scene. I was smiling ever so slightly at the touching moment, and then just feeling unbelievably sad. It was so upsetting! Poor Merlin.

I like the Merlin took Gwaine with him. I think those were some reused scenes when Merlin was riding with him at first. I loved their friendship in this episode. It was touching.

I like that Morgana caught on that something was up with Merlin leaving.

I enjoyed the confrontation scene between Merlin and Morgana, it was a little short though.

It's very sad that Arthur thought it was cowardly of Merlin not go with him. Merlin is usually the only one who doesn't get any armour and he has only very minor level skills at sword fighting, from Arthur's POV he must think that the only reason that he survives is probably through sheer luck. I would have thought he wouldn't want him to go, or go with him but not necessarily into battle.

I really liked that the characters trusted each others word. Like how Gwen didn't need to full story from Gaius to believe him when he said that Merlin had an important reason for not joining them.

It's great to see Balinor again. I'm surprised Merlin recognized his voice so easily. Those were such wonderful scenes. There were quite a lot of really lovely scenes! Quite a lot of great scene visually too.

I loved the way Merlin got his magic back.

I really liked Merlin looking into the crystals, the scene of the past and how he warned Arthur.

I really liked the music! It was atmospheric.

The battle was great, very exciting! Worrying to.

I wish that Merlin was heading towards the battle as himself but at least as Dragoon Merlin will be able to use his magic in front of Arthur without worrying.

    Negatives
I wish we'd seen more of Morgana's reaction.
Morgana is so smug. I truly hate what she's become.
The slug scenes were almost comical rather than scary.
How did Morgana get a hold of the slug and how did she know how to use it?

I'm so excited for the next episode!

If you count each season as a year (or in the case of S1&2 before the year gaps between each season then the months between seasons would make each one about a year). That would mean since the start of season 1 it's been 10 years. Though you'd only add 9 years if you're starting from how old they were in S1. In my view Arthur turned 21 in S1 (because in the episode where he was crowned prince of Camelot he 'came of age' so given that he didn't look younger than that to me I always assumed he turned 21 then). Merlin is younger than him so was probably about 19/20 in S1, so he'd probably be about 28/29 now. I think Arthur is suppose to be 30 now. Morgana is older than him and Gwen is the oldest but we never really got many clues about their ages.

Hm, I don't like that they didn't make a big deal about the fact that he had Excalibur already. I remember seeing a special-looking sword, but I missed that it was Excalibur because there was absolutely no fanfare! I would have liked some fanfare.

Upon rewatching and going with Balinor's words Merlin is already wielding an amazing power before the cave reveals his true self.

Balinor: Your journey has only just begun. You wield a power you cannot yet conceive of. Only in the heart of the crystal cave will your true self be revealed. Move towards the light. Your destiny awaits.

I think that Merlin, young or old, is already the most powerful wizard ever.

Wow what a beginning to the end! I thought that this episode was brilliant. From the last glimpse of humour at the beginning to the full pitch battle at the end.

Yeah it had its flaws but it wouldn't really be Merlin without them! Gwaine's girlfriend/fling was more of a plot device to get Morgana to face Merlin than anything else, but it's Gwaine he was born to rescue damsels in distress, so it wasn't really a surprise. Shame she was evil, what with this being the end and everything. The magical sucking creature was interesting, side note where is Morgana getting all these dangerous monster from?!! Was it just me, or did Mordred seem uncomfortable with Morgana attaching fellow magical beings? It will probably come to nothing but I thought it was interesting.

Ah Merlin and Arthur L The scene in which Merlin explains he needs to go away was heart-breaking to watch. Mainly because it was so well acted that both the King and his friend/servant seemed equally devastated :'( We saw glimpses of what Merlin used to be like, unsure of what he was and useless in a sword fight! The moment magicless when he screamed for Gwaine to save him was very telling. It was nice to see the Merlin and Gwaine together as friends, that was such a major thing in series 3, before almost totally forgotten in S4, it was great to see it back. The return of Balinor was slightly ruined for me as the actors name popped up just after the opening titles! But it was really moving watching Merlin and his father again. And the idea that Merlin is magic, born of magic and the earth is wonderful! In your face Morgana, you trapped him in the wrong part of the cave!!! I can't begin to explain how amazing I found the part when Merlin used the Crystals to communicate with Arthur Loved Arthur's confusion yet at the same time he knew he had to act on it which bodes well for the short future.

Arthur came across, as he did last week, as very King like, if you get what I mean. He didn't flinch in the face of danger and his willingness to do whatever it takes to save as many of his people as possible is wonderful to see. Plus he does great rousing speeches!

3 final things, Merlin as old man Emerys could be interesting to explain to Arthur, the trailer was a little short on action but did reveal Merlin saying he has magic (but to who?) and finally the whole title The Diamond of the Day, still totally confuses me! What does it mean?

PS: I love that Traitor's cloak XYfan!

It wasn't just you, he wasn't impressed at all. It might not come to aything but Mordred is not blinded by hatred like Morgana.

It was. It broken my heart seeing Merlin crying for help. But is it me or Gwaine was at the brink of tears when he left Merlin behind? I was quite touched by that.

I thought the same, there goes it for spoiler-free people!

I think it comes from this poem by Edwin Muir:

O Merlin in your crystal cave
Deep in the diamond of the day,
Will there ever be a singer
    Whose music will smooth away
The furrow drawn by Adam's finger
Across the memory and the wave?
    Or a runner who'll outrun
    Man's long shadow driving on,
Break through the gate of memory
And hang the apple on the tree?
    Will your magic ever show
The sleeping bride shut in her bower,
The day wreathed in its mound of snow
and Time locked in his tower?

I saw it too. I have a feeling Mordred might even turn against Morgana in the end.. but that is just my guessing. He isn't fully evil.. or to my eyes, he isn't evil at all, just confused about his feelings and disappointed in Arthur and Merlin.

Yeah he seemed like he was about to cry.. i wonder what was he thinking about. Maybe the thought that might be his last time to see his friend? or maybe he was sad that Merlin didn't share that secret with him?
