Wow, Alexander was not joking when he said a lot of people died :/ I was so gutted when Morgana died lol.

I'm not sure how I feel about this episode, I think it was the best possible ending for the way series 5 panned out, however looking back to all that was promised in s1 and s2 (i.e. golden age, magic being allowed etc.) I am slightly disappointed as to how it ended. I feel like the writers lost their way a little bit. However, as I said, I thought it was a good ending for how series 5 panned out.

I personally didn't like the final scene though.

Me neither. Guess they meant to make it hopeful as Arthur hasn't risen yet and Merlin is kind of creepily waiting around. Didn't work for me though.

Yeah, the idea of Merlin living forever without all of his friends isn't really a 'happy' ending imo.

It's not. Even if he went back to Camelot, helped Gwen rule and got to see "happy times" (Gwen seemed cool with magic so maybe it was allowed under certains terms and Albion was united and a long peaceful time ensued since Morgana is no more) that means that he also witnessed it all tumbling down. saw all his loved ones go and remains yet alone and waiting for Arthur to come back (to do what, exactly?). Makes no sense to me.

Well, it's as I thought. A wholly unsatisfying ending. The entire point to the show, what the entire plot is built around, wasted. No golden age, no acceptance of magic, no Merlin being recognized for who he really is. Instead we have no idea what happens to Camelot, only that Merlin must be a hitchhiker. No idea what he does either. I would have even been mildly more satisfied if they did what some predicted, Merlin "taking away" magic. But we don't even get that.

The episode itself was okay, but I believe they could have done much better to bring the show to an actual close.

Wow! What an emotional rollercoaster! So didn't expect Arthur to be stabbed and Mordred to be dead 5 minutes in! I loved how the episode really focused on Merlin and Arthur and their relationship. I love that Arthur found out and i thought his reaction to it was very good, confused and angry to start then slowly turning to acceptance was wonderful to watch. Colin Morgan and Bradley James really helped make Merlin what is was and i think it was apt that the end focused on them.

Ahh my poor Gwaine, betrayed by a woman and to die thinking he betrayed the king, it was heartbreaking Glad Leon didn't die too other i may have had to call off Christmas!

The final scenes between Merlin and Arthur was spectacular loved how Arthur said thank you to Merlin and Merlin's utter devastation at his friends death was really moving.

The modern ending wasn't as bad as i thought it could have been, it would have worked just as well without it, but hey.Everyone will now be heading to Glastonbury!

I really do believe this episode and epi12 have done the series justice and i have been thoroughly entertained over the past 4 a bit years. For the Love of Camelot, long live Merlin!

well what an episode, I liked it but charactors I loved died.

they have to make at least one film now, I mean come on what was with the end scene, it was kind of funny though old merlin in modern clothes was quite funny but to wait this long without his friends is stupid, I what happened after gwen became queen alone was she even pregnant i wanted mini arturs and gwens, mean writers, booooooooo.

still liked watching morgana angry thinking shes won but sadly merlin will always win over her hehe.

will miss this show soooooooooo much I'm the only one in my house who watched it, am praying for what drama will be taking over next year my fingers are crossed for it to have as much success as merlin has and that it will be a drama and not some crap reality shit because if it is hate mail will be on its way to the bbc.

I'm serious though about the films I either watched it or read it in an interview that bradley was up for a film so writers get writing.

I think the episode was pretty amazing, particularly the whole Arthur/Merlin but I agree that they could have done better wrapping it up.

I absolutely agree! By making Arthur fall so early on into the episode he got the chance to come to terms with the reveal (still rushed to my taste but way better than I had anticipated). I was a sobbing wreck thanks to Colin and Bradley's acting, kudos to both

From Eoin's twitter: That was petty emotional...I'm going to the pub after that...& if I ever need some rope snapped around the house I'm calling @Tomhopperhops

I was devastated to see Gwaine die and at the hands of Morgana no less, ugh (where did she get the snake from, was she giving it a ride on her horse? ) But all wars have casualties on both sides, I guess. I'm glad that Morgana died without redemption, she was way past it in my opinion. Arthur flinched when Merlin ran her through but Merlin didn't even blink, that's what a dying friend makes to you I guess. Go Merlin!

I would like it if he came back in a spin off or even for real (how would that turn out... a TV show answering that would be nice!) but I would hope he would have been 'watching over Albion' as opposed to just sleeping and having a huge blank so that he would actually be able to make a difference.

    Anyway -

Overall I really liked the episode especially with the way the reveal was dealt with, although there were a few niggles for me. Mainly, I wonder how Gwen rules/what the reactions of people are (Druids/knights/people in Camelot etc?) and also to Morgana's death... A bit on that would have been nice. I also have to wonder what happens after Gwen dies since that is not how it plays out in the legend and do we really think Gwen would take another husband? A spin off on either that or even better one about what Merlin gets up to during the rest of that period and well into the future would be amazing. Don't just want to rely on the fanfics

I guess that the writers have given everyone the chance to write their favourite continuation to the story. It might or might not be more satisfying than sticking to the one they would have thought best to tell.

I totally agree and I like the fanfics for that reason. Not sure if you read any but there are some really great ones out there

The thing that makes me want a sequel is seeing it on TV/film with the actors and the animation etc. The stories might have been a bit meh in this series (and obviously some people will dislike the way any sequel/reboot happens) but actually seeing it on the screen is very different to reading it in a fanfic which is exactly why I want to see it...

On an unrelated note was I the only one wondering where Merlin got the cape Arthur was wearing as he was sent to Avalon?

I've just realised there is a little bit more to look forward to... the deleted scenes and bloopers

Whoa. Chock full of revelations and closure. What an ending.

I whooped when Merlin revealed his magic to Arthur. The King's gradual progression from denial to acceptance was well handled and not too rushed. The scene at the end with Merlin holding Arthur in his arms as he died nearly brought me to tears. Bradley James and Colin Morgan really pulled it off with some amazing lines.

I was surprised that Mordred was killed so early and the battle ended so quickly, but I realize TPTB wanted to spend more time on the reveal and its implications. I thought it was somewhat ironic that Mordred and two of those who helped him in 1x08 - Arthur and Morgana - met their deaths by the dragon forged blade. Morgana's line to Mordred was confusing, since I was pretty sure he would die at Camlann, but it disappeared when I saw her at the grave.

So Gwen is Queen of Camelot; Excalibur rests in the lake depths; Gwaine is dead.

I'm not sure how I feel about the final shot. The abrupt transition was disorienting. Yet the focal point in many of the legends is that Arthur is the Once and Future King and will (supposedly) return. I may have to watch it again later to decide how I feel about it.
