I think it is interesting how perspectives change once the show has progressed and we've gotten the chance to know the characters better. It is also funny to realize how we are able to catch up on new things when we watch the episodes over again.

People who have decided to join in:

    Rules are as follows:

    1. We are getting started on the first Saturday of 2011 and a new thread will be open every following Saturday. We are following the order in the list above to open threads and we are selecting the episodes in sequential order, so all 39 episodes of the three series will be rewatched. Double-parter episodes will be rewatched together, so the rewatching will start on Saturday January 1st and end in Saturday September 3rd.

    2. Everyone opening a rewatching thread should copy and paste the information in this entry (Introduction, List of participants and Rules) in the first post. That way, keeping track of the turns and our progress will be easier and also having the rules at hand will be useful for those who might decided to join us half way through.

    3. Everyone opening a rewatching thread is responsible for reminding the next person in the list to do the same the following Saturday (sending a pm on Friday should do it).

    4. Anyone not being able to open a thread on a particular Saturday can swap turns with the next person in the list (or anyone else) as long as they keep track of their respective turns.

    5. Everyone opening a rewatching thread has to propose a new topic in the "The Best and Worst of Merlin" thread.

    6. Agreed that we all sometimes just don't have the time or the inclination to leave comments, I'd like to make clear that it's not compulsory to rewatch and/or comment on every single episode.

    7. Anyone is most welcome to join at any time. I will make sure to add new members to the list.

    8. If you don't own the DVDs or the episodes, don't let that stop you from joining. Feel free to pm me so I can give you a link to a site where to watch them online

    9. Should anyone have any doubt, do not hesitate to pm me.

10.Failure to repeatedly comply with the rules will allow the editor to remove participants from the list.

As we rewatch, we can work on filling the following lists:

-Arthur's attributes to becoming the great king of legend (current list can be found at the beginning of the Arthur thread)
-'What Arthur and Merlin call each other' list (current list can be found at the beginning of the Merlin & Arthur thread).
-All the times Arthur has been conveniently knocked unconscious or that something 'strange' has happened around him which has prevented him from figuring out for himself that Merlin has magic.
-All the times Merlin uses magic + whether his eyes turn gold and whether he incants.
-A record of all the times Uther says something about magic.

-A record of all the potions made by Gaius to date.
-A count of all the times Gwen says "I have faith in Arthur" (or something similar)
-A count of all the times Merlin says "I have faith in Arthur" (or something similar)
-A record of all encounters between Merlin and the Dragon.
    -Morgana's smirks of doom.
-Also, we can keep adding funny arguments to the "Things we've learnt watching Merlin" thread.

This week, we are rewatching Season 1 Episode 1 'The Dragon's Call'

Happy New Year. Mine is off to a nice start watching Merlin.

Hearing that Julian Jones wanted to get rid of the opera singing villain and the Geek Syndicate guys saying absolutely no - I agree with the Geeks because that scene with the song, people falling asleep and the cobwebs was excellent.

Still love the fact that Merlin's special reward for saving Arthur is to become his manservant and everyone clapping at the honour and the look that is exchanged between them.

Merlin calls Arthur - an ass, prat, and to the Great Dragon an idiot. Not sure if we are only covering the names that say direct to each other? Arthur calls Merlin - stupid, deaf as well as dumb and and idiot.

Guinevere hopes that Morgana will become queen and is not envious of her because she wouldn't want to marry Arthur. How things have changed...

I love the aria piece to bits And the making people fall asleep to it is a nice way of performing magic, at least something different to which we will later on see.

The reward that changed/started it all. Bless Uther for once!

Thank you! I'll add those, both direct and indirect ones, having information around doesn't harm

It seems the aria scene was Julian Murphy's idea.

Forgot to add that Merlin first called Arthur 'my friend' or are we going with the not so nice names? There weren't any smirks of doom but maybe Morgana gave a smirk when she was choosing which dress to wear and when she entered the hall?

Neither Guinevere nor Merlin express any faith in Arthur... in fact the opposite for Merlin. Though Guinevere has faith that Arthur is a 'real rough tough save the world' type of man.

My first thought when I rewatched is how I would have liked TPTB to have kept those sweeping shots they used when Merlin first arrives in Camelot for other occasions too. I love the way he comes over the hill at the start and how the camera spans around him when he first sets foot in Camelot. Merlin uses magic 10 times in this episode (I've got them all referenced if it's of any interest to anyone), his eyes turn gold only 7 times and he doesn't incant at all...

On the RIP list: Son of the witch (death by beheading), Lady helen (death by voodoo doll), blond maid (death by song and wrist clasping), witch (death by light fitting)
I wondered whether "Gregory" the Camelot knight who travels with Sir Helen was dead as well, but I don't think so or they would have noticed his absence (I think).

lol at the two knights with long hair on each side of Uther during the beheading scene... As seasons pass, haircuts become shorter (except for Gaius who seems to follow a reverse trend!)

The one thing that annoys me most in this episode is how Merlin pushes Arthur away from the knife, but in the next shot, Arthur is falling towards Merlin. Did they think we wouldn't notice?!

Ahhh, Uther's necklace... It's blinding in its ugliness, with the parts layered on top of each other... Seriously! And also i realy don't think that the dark red and grey tunic looks good with the bright red cloak, but hey! It's funny to see how casually Arthur and his mates (presumably fellow knights) dress when they roam in the lower town. We don't see him wearing non-Camelot branded clothes later on.

To go with your lists, BM, may I add: -Dresses: Morgana wears a blue dress, gwen a pink one with white sleeves.
    -1 dragon scene
    -1 chest scene

One thing I noticed in this first ever episiode was how younger looking the four main characters were before (Merlin, Arthur, Gwen and Morgana). Epecially Merlin. He had a bit of roundness in his face at that time which made him look adorable.

I think it's more noticeable in Merlin because Colin has lost weight ever since. I agree he looked adorable with his round face but series 3 Colin with a nicer haircut than series 1 and 2 (and probably having gained a bit more of weight) looks might fine as well

My favorite scene in this episode is the epic battle of Arthur and Merlin in the market place. It was the point where Arthur was beginning to notice Merlin's "can't quite put his finger on it" thing. I think Arthur started to realize that Merlin will play an important role in his life.

Question, did Lady Helen took the maidsevant's singing talents when she killed her?

Well, I enjoyed the scene, but it struck me how slowly they are actually moving when fighting against each other. I remembered it as being much more active, but if you watch it without the music, it's quite funny how awkwardly they actually move around... They're not familiar with the weapon, it's quite funny actually.

I don't know about the witch getting people's singing talents. I guess she would have had to get Lady Helen's to sing in front of Camelot, although this could all be down to magic?!

I love the music in the fighting scene a lot!

I think she 'inherited' the singing talent when she killed Lady Helen and impersonated her, so to speak. She hums all episode through ever since she kills her when she is about to do evil. They explain it in the audio commentary

I love that music too, BM, although the music throughout the episode is actually really good. I love the witch's arya, and the whole main theme when Merlin arrives in Camelot too

It surprises me how easily Merlin seems to be using his magic in episode 1. Seriously, it should be easy to use "forbearne" without saying anything afterwards? Also he's supposed to be the greatest warlock of all time, yet, other than the end of season 1, I don't think he's done anything that amazing. When the witch disappeared after her son was killed, it struck me that Merlin could have used a similar trick in S3 when old Merlin was brought to the pyre, yet he had to rely on potions, etc... which is rather messy and his healing abilities are abysmal to say the least. I hope we'll see more of his powers in S4.

I remember there was a big uproar because Merlin was indeed great at performing magic at first (it seemed to flow so easy and naturally) but then his magic seemed to have receded all of a sudden. He's done a lot of moving things around, freezing and eventually blowing things and people away but as you point out nothing too spectacular yet (apart from summoning the dragon) to be the greatest warlock ever. It's quite frustrating how his powers are forgotten at times for the sake of the plot (freeing himself from jail in 2x01 but then being unable to do the same in series 3, etc).

The lists are great. Maybe at the end the lists for Uther and Gaius could also be put in their own threads?

Regarding Arthur being knocked unconscious - well everyone in the aria scene was made 'unconscious' so Merlin could use magic...

I think stopping time is pretty powerful. It would be an easy way to help Merlin in many situations though I don't think he has used this often or at all.

Sure, when we have covered all episodes I'll put the lists in the first post of all related threads. It's gonna be some awesome source of information.

Wow!! what a list, you guys have covered practically every detail!! :O

i have nothing to add to this amazing list but now i know whatsort of things tolook out for next episode.

It really is amazing to see how much the characters and their relationships have progressed. Arthur and Morgana have changed the most. Arthur here is such an arrogant idiot and Morgana is so kind and nice.
