I think it is interesting how perspectives change once the show has progressed and we've gotten the chance to know the characters better. It is also funny to realize how we are able to catch up on new things when we watch the episodes over again.

People who have decided to join in:

    Rules are as follows:

    1. We are getting started on the first Saturday of 2011 and a new thread will be open every following Saturday. We are following the order in the list above to open threads and we are selecting the episodes in sequential order, so all 39 episodes of the three series will be rewatched. Double-parter episodes will be rewatched together, so the rewatching will start on Saturday January 1st and end in Saturday September 3rd.

    2. Everyone opening a rewatching thread should copy and paste the information in this entry (Introduction, List of participants and Rules) in the first post. That way, keeping track of the turns and our progress will be easier and also having the rules at hand will be useful for those who might decided to join us half way through.

    3. Everyone opening a rewatching thread is responsible for reminding the next person in the list to do the same the following Saturday (sending a pm on Friday should do it).

    4. Anyone not being able to open a thread on a particular Saturday can swap turns with the next person in the list (or anyone else) as long as they keep track of their respective turns.

    5. Everyone opening a rewatching thread has to propose a new topic in the "The Best and Worst of Merlin" thread.

    6. Agreed that we all sometimes just don't have the time or the inclination to leave comments, I'd like to make clear thatit's not compulsory to rewatch and/or comment on every single episode.

7.Anyone is most welcome to join at any time. I will make sure to add new members to the list.

    8. If you don't own the DVDs or the episodes, don't let that stop you from joining. Feel free to pm Boom-moo so I can give you a link to a site where to watch them online

    9. Should anyone have any doubt, do not hesitate to pm Boom-moo.

10.Failure to repeatedly comply with the rules will allow the editor to remove participants from the list.

As we rewatch, we can work on filling the following lists: -Magic and spells-RIP list-Lives Saved list-What Arthur calls Merlin-What Merlin calls Arthur-Arthur's attributes to becoming the great king of legend-Arthur is knocked unconscious or prevented from knowing about Merlin's magic-What Uther says about magic-Potions made by Gaius-Gaius's smacks-'I have faith Arthur will become a great king' statements-Merlin and Great Dragon meetings-Great Dragon's riddles-Morgana's premonitory dreams-Morgana's smirks of doom-Arthur and Gwen moments-Chestporns/Bodyporns-Dungeon time-Fashion. -Also, we can keep adding funny arguments to the "Things we've learnt watching Merlin" thread.

    Arthur and Gwen moments:
-Gwen reluctantly allows Arthur to stay in her home. Arthur is uncomfortable at the idea but knows he can trust Gwen to keep it secret.
-The first night Arthur assumes Gwen's bed is his and although irritated she says nothing. While making herself as comfortable as possible in the back room, Arthur says "Goodnight... Guinevere" to which she replies still respectful "Goodnight, my Lord."
-Next day over dinner Gwen discovers why Arthur has secretly entered the jousting tournament. He fears the people only respect him because of his title. She assures him that it is not true but when pressed admits she would not tell him otherwise. Arthur wants to be treated like everyone else and so if he wins the tournament it will be based on merit and not his title.
-Before retiring to bed Arthur wants to take a bath. Gwen says she does not have a bath tub so he asks for a bowl of hot water. Again Gwen becomes irritated with his thoughtlessness in inconveniencing her into getting the water from the well.
-The next evening, Arthur discovers he has been sleeping in Gwen's bed. He blames Gwen for allowing him to assume the bed was his. Annoyed Gwen compares him to a spoilt child. Surprised, he wants to know if she has anything more to say. She reprimands him about his rude and arrogant ways in her home. If he says titles do not matter then he should not expect her to be at his beck and call. He admits she is right and offers to cook dinner to make up for his poor behaviour.
-At the start of dinner, Arthur pulls out a seat for Gwen. During dinner, Gwen admits he snores like a pig which he denies in good humour. He insists on putting the plates away when finished. However Gwen notices that the plates have the royal seal and realises that Arthur did not cook the food. Arthur says he can "kill a chicken from a thousand paces" but he can't cook one, that is the job for servants. He immediately regrets saying this but Gwen says she would rather be a servant than a liar. She hoped he had learnt some humility when he offered to cook for her. He confesses he has much to learn, cooking included, and knowing what to say to someone he cares about.
-After Arthur recounts why he killed Odin's son, Gwen says he is not to blame. Arthur asks if he can stay at her house now that Odin has sent Myror to assassinate him. She agrees and insists he sleeps on her bed to have a good night's rest. He refuses and says he will sleep on the floor (however he secretly asks Merlin to bring a mattress from the palace).
-Next morning, she gives him a token for good luck for his final jousting match. They kiss.
-Gwen runs to check on Arthur when he is hurt by Myror. Arthur insists on completing the match but Gwen says he is too badly injured. He refuses to withdraw and she cannot believe that he would risk his life to protect his pride and adds "You have nothing to prove, least of all to me." However Arthur believes he has everything to prove to himself.
-After winning the jousting tournament, Arthur decides not to reveal himself as the champion and lets William get all the glory. Gwen is surprised but pleased by his humility.
-Arthur tells Uther that he learnt a great deal from his trip, all the while looking at Gwen, who smiles in return.
-Finally, Arthur tells Gwen that his father would never understand what happened between them. She understands but hopes things will be different when he is king. He walks away but turns around to give a last longing look. She watches and then walks away.

Merlin calls Arthur: (both implied) to Arthur - arrogant; to Myror - a prat
    Arthur calls Merlin an idiot.

Loved how Guinevere brought down arrogant Arthur which he thoroughly deserved. And then THE KISS and their last scene when Arthur looks behind to look at Guinevere were gorgeous.
Merlin's rant was brillaint and about time too...
The chicken scene was hilarious. So was William.
How did Merlin get the matress to Guinevere's???

Indeed, I love that scene, Colin delivers it brilliantly. But he says: 'I have fought griffins (episode 1x05 Lancelot), witches (episode 1x01 The Dragon's Call and episode 1x13 Le Morte d'Arthur), erm... bandits! (episode 1x07 The Gates of Avalon). I have been punched, poisoned (episode 1x04 The Poisoned Chalice), pelt with fruit (episode 1x01 The Dragon's Call) and episode 1x07 The Gates of Avalon) and all the while, I have to hide who I really am because if anyone finds out, Uther will have me executed!' When has he been punched? I don't think he has..

Duh, he strapped it to his back

Funny things concerning clothing in this episode:
-Lady Vivian's turquoise/green dress is worn by a random Camelot woman watching the jousting.
-The shirt and cloak that Arthur borrows from Merlin has never been worn by Merlin.

I also love how Gwen scolds Arthur and how he reckons she is right. Now, it is me or the "You have nothing to prove, least of all to me" is a bit pretentious at this point?

I feel it was presumptuous on her part that Arthur would want to prove something especially to her. She should have said "You have nothing to prove to anyone."

I think so. They had kissed already but they were far from being an item.

I've elaborated on this. What do you say?

Arthur's attributes to becoming the great king of legend:
-He acknowledges to Guinevere that it's good of her to let him stay in her home (although he is not really willing to stay).
-Arthur tried to make King Odin's son to withdraw from a challenge knowing he would kill him. He is still haunted by his scared face.
-He won't let Gwen sleep on the floor (although he won't either).
-"I have everything to prove to myself" He wants to be respected as a man, not because he is a prince.
-After winning the tourney, he decides not to reveal himself as the champion, lets William get the praise hence learning a humility lesson from Gwen.
-"There has been enough bloodshed" He wants peace not revenge against Odin as he understands his grief.

LOL at Arthur won't sleep on floor either.

What about this? After learning humility from Gwen, he decides not to reveal himself as the champion of the jousting tournament and instead lets William get the praise and glory.

The rest is good to me.

I suppose this episode (and many others) we could have lists on how he is so spoilt and arrogant

Good, I like the rephrasing better

A/G moments are tricky so I'll give them a shot so you gusy can add/edit/rephrase:

    Arthur and Gwen moments:
-Gwen engages Arthur in conversations about private matters, and he give honest replies.
-Gwen reprimands Arthur about his rude ways and he reckons she is right and offers to cook dinner to make up for his behaviour.
-He is a gentleman pulling her seat for Gwen and putting the plates away when they are done with dinner.
-She gives him a scold and a lesson about humility. He reckons he has much to learn and implies he cares about her. -She gives him a token for good luck. They kiss.
-Gwen runs to check on Arthur when he is hurt by Myror.
-"You have nothing to prove, least of all to me."
-He reckons to Uther that it's been a fruitful trip and that he's learnt a great deal, all the while looking at Gwen, who smiles in return.
-Things as they are he can't act on his feelings. She understands but has hope for a better future.

    Also:

'I have faith Arthur will become a great king' statements:
-"Perhaps when you are king things will be different". Gwen hopes that Arthur will be a better king than his father and will make some unfair things right.

So I've only re-watched some and hope to finish at some point tomorrow. I haven't been able to get to it because of my hubby having some physical problems, but hopefully he's okay now. As I said, this is the episode I love the most and the one that hooked me on Merlin a few months ago. So, I wanted to at least get started on the topic that stirs me the most about Merlin. Hope I can come back to finish this up, but for now I just want to start.

    boom-moo wrote:

You see, I have this thing about when A/G started really and why I don't think the happenings of this episode were too soon or came out of the blue. I think the producers/writers did a brilliant job setting us (and A & G) up for this in 1x10, 1x13, 2x1.

1x10. Arthur suddenly realizes Guinevere is a woman, not just a servant. Has spunk, which I'm sure he liked, and is a faithful friend to Merlin. He likes it, has noticed her, but that is all. It's the first step. It's happened to lots of guys. Knew a girl all her life and something happens and he sees her in a new light.

1x13. Here's where I think they really introduced it. We the audience are let in on a secret. Gwen likes him. She talks to him while he's out of it. Now we could have thought it was only about her hope for the future with him as a king, and of course that was a big part. But then she kisses his hand--hey, his FINGER was in her mouth! That's a little more than "you'll be a great king." So we learn something was going on with her, right? But lo and behold, he heard her. He heard what she said and he saw her reaction after he started with his flirty, teasing about it. He was completely different with her than he ever had been before. He was talking to her differently. The way he said "Guinevere" and reached out his hand could some day be followed with the words "come to bed." Something was going on then and there. They were not in love, of course, but we would need to use or imagination and figure that when these two saw each other around the halls of the castle, that there would have been a change in their dynamics: some looks and maybe even further teasing/flirting. There had to be! It would be a flirtation on his part; a little more on hers. That's how I see it.

2x1. So all of this was in place when she knocks him down and falls on top of him. As we talked about last week, no wonder the poor guy was stumbling when he tried to express himself in the infirmity. And I'm sure her sweaty look, which she wears well, looked pretty good to him right then. If this was real life, I would venture a guess that this little lady would be invading his thoughts from time to time after all of the various above.

SOOOOO. Enters 2x2 at this point in time in their lives. Here's how I see it: A/G moments started when he walked in the door. She said "My Lord" and he "Guinevere. A: "It's good of you to Let me stay in your home." G: "I'm happy to help."

Think they felt strange from the start of the visit? You betcha! Her complaining to Merlin that she can't believe he talked her into this and his "you don't really expect me to stay here." All a part of some tension already existing.

I had to stop my viewing at what I think was one of sweetest A/G moments of this episode, and maybe the series: Bedtime of the first night. First, his insensitive behavior with the bed thing and her irritation over it, but then I love the sweet "Goodnight. . .Guinevere" followed by "Goodnight, my Lord." A precious A/G moment!

I left off there and hope I can get back to watch more in the next day day or so. But for now, you get my drift. For me, everything the two of them did or said with respect to the other in this episode was an A/G moment. I think all that happened in those three days worked on their hearts and they began to fall in love. Neither wanted it to happen. Both thought it would be a hopeless situation, but it wasn't something they were able to control. I think it's very believable and timely that it happened the way it did. I believe sometimes there can be love at first sight & I know people who have had some form of it in their lives and they lived long lives together. A & G had a variation of that. I'll borrow the phrase of a reviewer on this site who said that in the case of Arthur, it was "love at first insight." He got to see the real Gwen in those days at her cottage and he fell hard.

Sorry to go on about this, but I wanted to have a chance to get it off my chest. Maybe I better not continue my list of the A/G moments. As you can see, it would probably be a mile long! But I sure do love this couple a lot and I think the performances by Bradley and Angel were nothing short of brilliant. I heard the kiss scene was unrehearsed and undirected. Wow.

I don't think Gwen liked him as a man then, not even close. She surely thinks he'll be a far better ruler than his father as he's got a better heart and she wants him to live with all her will, but like you, I don't think there are any romantic feelings in play from his or her part. I agree that Arthur has started to see Gwen in all the colours of the rainbow from then on (particularly from 2x01 on), instead of just being another grey servant he crosses in the hallway without a second thought, but 1x10 is too early to me to talk about love or romantic feelings.

I think that 2x01 is more a trigger for Arthur than 1x10 and 1x13. I agree that she has probably invaded his feelings more than once ever since. And her snapping at him in 2x02 totally did it for him. If you think about it, he complains to Merlin at the beginning of the episode that people give him a special treatment because he is the prince, not because he deserves and what Gwen does is exactly that: treat him like she would any other man, any other peasant, just like he deserves regardless of his title. Out of place of her but surely it made the best of the impressions on Arthur. He wants sincere people around and he is partial to a woman who apart from good hearted can be honest, sensible and not afraid to speak her mind.

    Yay! Leon's arrived

I really enjoy the tone of this episode. I mean, I know it's lighthearted, but at the same time it shows a new facet to the characters, who are all deceiving each other.
I particularly love how Arthur deceives his father by pressing all the right buttons (but why on Earth do they need to eat so much food and so far apart?!) and how Merlin/Gwen are all with Arthur. I love how Gwen tells Gaius Sir William or Deyra is an arrogant pig

I'm sort of annoyed that Arthur doesn't really see the error of his ways. I mean, he understands what Gwen tells him about being arrogant and rude, but his understanding seems to stop at what he's told. He doesn't seem to be able to extrapolate that to his general behaviour. Once a prat, always a prat

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but there's absolutely no continuity in any of the shots where the knights are in a line on their horses. Sir William both wear blue tunics and are separated by a man in grey. Yet if you look at any of the shots from behind (showing the line up) you can't find two blue tunics, let alone a grey separating them...

I might be mistaken, but I think it's the first time Morgana actually sits in the Royal box. Gwen is still on the edge of it when talking to Gaius but seems to be closer to Morgana when Arthur gets injured (I guess it's a different round).

To me it's probably the episode where Gwen is the cutest. She's still meek and mild and pretty and sort of innocent. She seemed to lose this in S3.

Oh, and lastly. Could someone tell me where Arthur was hurt exactly?! Gwen applies gauze to his chainmail, but he's later seen with his arm in a sling and a very bloody hand?! Uh?

They have to milk the prattish behaviour until he is ready to be a king...

I agree. I find her really pretty in this episode and at her coronation. I think the make up and the hair are really well done, I particularly love the blush.

The fact that he keeps getting bandages on top of his chainmail is really on its own. The lance pierced the armour somewhere in his upper chest. The blood in his hand could be because he's touched his wound and the sling for drama purposes as well as the extra blood around it *shrugs*

Re A/G moments. I feel this episode is about proximity and awareness but not love for either of them.

    I agree, pcdsa.

    What Uther says about magic:
-The magical beast that Arthur makes up must be destroyed.
