It is interesting how perspectives change once the show has progressed and we've gotten the chance to know the characters better. It is also funny to realize how we are able to catch up on new things when we watch the episodes over again.

People who have decided to join in:

    Rules are as follows:

    1. We are getting started on the first Saturday of 2011 and a new thread will be open every following Saturday. We are following the order in the list above to open threads and we are selecting the episodes in sequential order, so all 39 episodes of the three series will be rewatched. Double-parter episodes will be rewatched together, so the rewatching will start on Saturday January 1st and end in Saturday September 3rd.

    2. Everyone opening a rewatching thread should copy and paste the information in this entry (Introduction, List of participants and Rules) in the first post. That way, keeping track of the turns and our progress will be easier and also having the rules at hand will be useful for those who might decided to join us half way through.

    3. Everyone opening a rewatching thread is responsible for reminding the next person in the list to do the same the following Saturday (sending a pm on Friday should do it).

    4. Anyone not being able to open a thread on a particular Saturday can swap turns with the next person in the list (or anyone else) as long as they keep track of their respective turns.

    5. Everyone opening a rewatching thread has to propose a new topic in the "The Best and Worst of Merlin" thread.

    6. Agreed that we all sometimes just don't have the time or the inclination to leave comments, so it is not compulsory to rewatch and/or comment on every single episode.

    7. Anyone is most welcome to join at any time. Boom-moo will make sure to add new members to the list.

    8. If you don't own the DVDs or the episodes, don't let that stop you from joining. Feel free to pm boom-moo who can give you a link to a site where to watch them online

    9. Should anyone have any doubt, do not hesitate to pm boom-moo.

10.Failure to repeatedly comply with the rules will allow the editor to remove participants from the list.

As we rewatch, we can work on filling the following lists:

    -Magic and spells
    -RIP list
    -Lives Saved list
    -What Arthur calls Merlin
    -What Merlin calls Arthur

Interesting how both Gaius and the Great Dragon knew about Morgana's powers all along, and how Merlin gets to know about it at the same time that she realizes herself. Morgana trusts Merlin at this point with her secret and he would go to great lengths for her sake. Little did they know how the tables would turn.

-Morgana lits a candle and makes the flame grow bigger (using her mind).
-Morgana makes a flower vase shatter into pieces (using her mind).

Didn't Merlin know she had magical powers in The Gates of Avalon?

    A/G
Arthur says he believes Guinevere when Uther doubts her words.

    GD riddles
It would be better if the witch never knew the true extent of her powers.

    ---

Modred knew about Emrys but Aglain didn't which is strange.

Uther refers to Morgana as being too much like her father. I was watching him carefully when Gaius said he hadn't let Gorlois down but I didn't detect anything suspicious. I remember in a future episode, can't remember which one, where something similar happened and it was more obvious that he talking about himself.

I don't know. There are good hints too in 1x13 and her "Merlin you must beware, this is only the beginning" scene but it's not clear that Merlin knows for sure.

    Merlin and Great Dragon meetings:
-1 (13 so far) where the dragon refuses to aid Merlin seek help for Morgana.

    Great Dragon's riddles:

    I added a bit here:

    Arthur and Gwen moments:
-Arthur says he believes Guinevere when Uther doubts her words. They exchange a look.
-He implies with a sad look in a conversation with Merlin that a girl that is not at his level can't be a friend, let alone anything else.

Yeah, in Gates of Avalon he was told she was seer so I assumed he realised she was magical.

I like your additions to A/G , I was struggling with Arthur's chat with Merlin.

True, I agree he should know already indeed.

My wording isn't the best as per usual but I think it's a nice moment.

RIP: Aglain, some druids (probably), and maybe even those who were on the list and arrested for sorcery (we never get to know whether Uther carried his threat out.
    Bodyporns: None at all. Boo.

There's quite a few things I don't like about this episode, starting with the plot (or absence thereof) but everyone's entitled to prefer some episodes more than others, so that's fine.
What I really don't like though, is Merlin's role in this episode. To me he seems like he's changing his mind constantly about whether or not to help Morgana and ends up hindering more than anything else. I particularly dislike the fact he describes Morgana and other people discovering they have magic as "people like that", and the fact that he blatantly lies to Arthur. It's one thing not telling him what really happens, it's another saying "you know I never lie to you".

I think that Arthur's red shirt is very revealing, don't you think? It doesn't have any cord so it opens broadly across his chest. Hmmm, me likes the chestporn sneak peek

Yes, I noticed, and also a bit of Merlin neckporn at some point, when he's talking to Morgana... It's rare enough as it goes!

That's ok then. I like Merlin a lot when he comes into Morgana's bedroom and takes a look around before talking to her, as if making sure that she is comfortable and everything is alright around her. I dunno, I might be reading too much but those 2-3 seconds had always struck me in a good way.

Okay, I finally watched it and enjoyed it. I think I only saw this once, during that week when we jammed all of season two into a few days, and my daughter and grands were here so this time I really got to see things. I really think Merlin was so cute with Morgana and I can see why many people want to see them get together. I think they'd make a cute couple. He was so conflicted as to what to do about and with her; I felt for him. So glad he never told her anything. Seems everybody has covered everything for the list.

I do have one observation, though. I felt like Arthur and his gang were the bad guys. Did anyone else feel that way? You know how you watch a show and you're always rooting for the goodies when the baddies are after them. I was sooo rooting for the Druids in this episode. Actually, we're supposed to like them, right? When the king's messengers, including our dear Prince, came with those dogs, I wasn't rooting for them at all, and almost always I do.

I liked Katie's performance in this.

Yes, Arthur gets put in a not nice and pretty uncomfortable position. He believes the Druids had kidnapped Morgana though but we really didn't see him and his men kill every Druid as Uther ordered, I want to believe they didn't.

No premonitory dreams and no Smirks of Doom. However, Morgana did start a fire twice in this episode.

This episode somehow frustrated some Merlin/Morgana shippers (like me). If only Merlin could have been brave enough to tell Morgana that she has magic then things could have been different. Maybe Morgana wouldn't have fallen to the dark side. Or maybe things could have been different in their relationship.

But on the other hand, maybe the writers wanted to show that Merlin had to learn in carefully making decisions, otherwise he could face a long term consequence because of it. And since he was still young, he has to learn a lot, and his mistakes will make him stronger and wiser.

Regardless, I still liked this episode.

In any case, I think that Morgause would have brainwashed Morgana all the same so I guess it was a means to keep Merlin's magic secret from her (who would have spilled the beans at the first tantrum) and as you point out, to teach Merlin a lesson on the consequences of his actions.

Finally got around to this re-watch! And as the rest of you have covered all of the key things all ready, i won't write much!

Firstly for a kingdom that is deep intolerant to magic there are a lot of people in Camelot who have links to magic!! You'd have thought Uther would have wiped them out years ago! On the Merlin/Morgana front I always watch this episode thinking "damn it Merlin you should have told her you have magic!" But i think that plot wise it was the best thing to do as it helps to explain why she is so easily manipulated by Morgause as she tries to find out about herself.
