It is interesting how perspectives change once the show has progressed and we've gotten the chance to know the characters better. It is also funny to realize how we are able to catch up on new things when we watch the episodes over again.

People who have decided to join in:

    Rules are as follows:

    1. We are getting started on the first Saturday of 2011 and a new thread will be open every following Saturday. We are following the order in the list above to open threads and we are selecting the episodes in sequential order, so all 39 episodes of the three series will be rewatched. Double-parter episodes will be rewatched together, so the rewatching will start on Saturday January 1st and end in Saturday September 3rd.

    2. Everyone opening a rewatching thread should copy and paste the information in this entry (Introduction, List of participants and Rules) in the first post. That way, keeping track of the turns and our progress will be easier and also having the rules at hand will be useful for those who might decided to join us half way through.

    3. Everyone opening a rewatching thread is responsible for reminding the next person in the list to do the same the following Saturday (sending a pm on Friday should do it).

    4. Anyone not being able to open a thread on a particular Saturday can swap turns with the next person in the list (or anyone else) as long as they keep track of their respective turns.

    5. Everyone opening a rewatching thread has to propose a new topic in the "The Best and Worst of Merlin" thread.

    6. Agreed that we all sometimes just don't have the time or the inclination to leave comments, so it is not compulsory to rewatch and/or comment on every single episode.

    7. Anyone is most welcome to join at any time. Boom-moo will make sure to add new members to the list.

    8. If you don't own the DVDs or the episodes, don't let that stop you from joining. Feel free to pm boom-moo who can give you a link to a site where to watch them online

    9. Should anyone have any doubt, do not hesitate to pm boom-moo.

10.Failure to repeatedly comply with the rules will allow the editor to remove participants from the list.

As we rewatch, we can work on filling the following lists:

    -Magic and spells
    -RIP list
    -Lives Saved list
    -What Arthur calls Merlin
    -What Merlin calls Arthur
-Arthur's attributes to becoming the great king of legend
-Arthur is knocked unconscious or prevented from knowing about Merlin's magic

    -Gaius's smacks
-'I have faith Arthur will become a great king' statements
    -Merlin and Great Dragon meetings

    -Morgana's smirks of doom
    -Arthur and Gwen moments

No Smirks of Doom here, nor premonitory dreams.

Is this the episode where Merlin and Arthur climb that fortress almost vertically?? I always found it very unrealistic to the point of being ridiculous, especially with Arthur in his heavy metal armour.

It is indeed DaNko. So did Myror back in 2x02, but then he was the most feared assassin so he might have Spiderman skills too

Yeah, Myror was also an all-powerful assassin, disposed of pretty easily

    Arthur/Gwen moments:

Stares at the beginning; stares around the campfire; stares at the end. She paid Lance little or no attention when A was present; mostly focused on Arthur; her tears when L left were total frustration with life. Here she back where she was with this prince who can't do anything for her really. But at least now she must know his feelings are genuine. Surely she knew he was lying when he said he only came because Morgana begged him.

Arthur makes his profession of his feelings to Merlin

They barely said words to each other; She said "Arthur" when he came into the cage; he said "Guinevere, time to go." Little said with words but a whole lot with looks

As far as I'm concerned, despite the uninspired title of the episode, it was really about them (A & G).

    Lives Saved:

    Lancelot & Gwen

    Dungeon time:

Gwen (or doesn't it count when it's not at the castle)

I HATE the Gwen/Lancelot pairing but can't believe I felt a bit of emotion during their touching scene when he rescued her from the prison cell. I even didn't mind the kiss too much. Don't want to see it ever happen again though.

I never enjoy this episode. I don't like it that Arthur is hurt and/or sad throughout the whole time. I get a little mad at Gwen for that "My feelings will never change" bit. The acting by Angel and Brad once again top notch.

I agree that she knows that his feelings are genuine (if anything Arthur's stares both at the beginning and the end of the episode speak volumes) and I agree that she didn't really believe him when he said he had only gone to rescue her because Morgana begged him. However, I think there was more in Gwen's tears than frustration. Arthur might not be able to be open about his feelings in public like Lancelot would, but if she would return them with the same intensity, she wouldn't have hurt so much about Lancelot leaving. There were deep feelings for Lancelot in those tears, let alone in the very clear way she expresses them along the episode (I had never felt this way before, my feelings will never change, etc).

I think it was meant to prove that Arthur's feelings are genuine but that Gwen is not right there with him yet.

I don't know what to make of Gwen's stare to Arthur at the beginning of the episode as she leaves with Morgana. Arthur is clearly besotted to me, but I can't read her too well. To me, she is more confused and surprised than anything about that fact. She seems to put her eyebrows together, puzzled, surprised and wondering if Arthur is as enamoured as he seems to be. What do you guys think?

I think that Gwen had some actual feelings for Lancelot in this episode. Really, for her Lancelot seems to be a much more realistic love than Prince Arthur. He's on her level, and Arthur is way above her. I've never liked Lancelot very much myself. He's too depressing and I'd much rather hang out with happy go lucky Gwaine. However, I was rather pleased with him when he didn't interfere with Arthur and Gwen, and just left. He also scored some awesome points in the last episode of season 3 for the nice things he said to Merlin. But that's beside the point.
This wasn't my favorite episode of the series, but it did have its good moments. I liked Arthur's confession of his feelings to Merlin. To me, that he would share something that painful shows a great deal of trust.

I think that speaks volumes about him and proves him worthy of sitting at Arthur's round table. That's one of the reasons why I think there isn't gonna be any cheating: if he got out of the way when Arthur and Gwen weren't serious yet and right after she declared her feelings for him just by knowing that Arthur had feelings for her, I doubt he is gonna mess up with Arthur after he is clearly with Gwen and has trusted Lancelot with a knighthood.

-Merlin tells Arthur that he can change Uther's rules and do things differently when he becomes a king.

I have to admit that Gwen is an enigma to me with regard to this episode. I wonder about that too. I wonder why Morgana said to her that she's awfully quiet these days. Morgana said she thought there must be a man involved. So she (Gwen) had apparently been thinking about the whole thing already. I guess we can assume he had been giving her some deep looks from time to time, especially when we think about his conversation with Merlin the episode before. It's clear the whole thing was really a struggle for him.

You are right. She certainly isn't where Arthur is and it does appear her feelings for Lancelot are pretty strong in this episode. She really liked him when he left that first time, I think, before all this Arthur stuff started. I guess she'll always care for him to some extent but hopefully Arthur is the one who will really have her heart when all is said and done? I hope we can read 3x13 that way, though you could tell there was something in the look that was exchanged shortly after he came back, but after that she seemed focused on Arthur. I sure hope you're right that there won't be any cheating.

Hated the kiss but I also hope it is never repeated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact I love Hengist for making fun of Lancelot's love for Guinevere.

Yes I felt very hurt for Arthur when he saw Guinevere holding Lancelot's hand and they look they gave each other. But even though that four-way-exchange of looks between them was hard to watch it was still a brilliant scene in how everyone realised the feelings they have for each other.

And although I had my doubts when boom-moo said (pre S3) she didn't believe that the love triange would go further than this episode, I think 3.13 has made me believe her prediction is true

I think so, I really don't see Lancelot getting out of the way back then, accepting a knighthood now only to mess up. That's not the man they have depicted so far.
