  • Merlin rules

A great show and season ending, although Ihope they don't make Morgana a dragonlord, Merlin's sign is the dragon and he was the last of the dragonlords.

Besides it'a pretty much a fact and a theme that Merlin is more powerful than Morgana, especially in this incarnation as his powers manifested much earlier and more powerfully than Morgana's. Merlin has also defeated Nimueh, Cornelius Segan (one of the most powerful sorcerers ever). So I understand that Morgana has to be his nemesis but his equal she can never be. I hope they don't bump up her powers to provide balance, she's very powerful and Morgause's training should give her a temporary boost but Merlin should ultimately win any one on one as he has in the past at the end of the last series.moreless
  • I feel as if the story is not progressing!

I was a bit disappointed in the season finale. I am watching Merlin since episode 1 and I will continue to watch it because I love the story and I love Colin and Bradley, and I cannot get enough of seeing them as Merlin and Arthur. They are doing an amazing job. However I feel the story is not progressing. Besides Arthur marrying Gwen, nothing worth mentioning happend in the season finale which would had us wondering about what will happen next. Although there were plenty of possibilities, such as Morgana discovering the truth about Merlin, or maybe Gwen as the queen discovering the truth about Merlin. This options could have put some interesting prospects to the development of the story. Not to mention Arthur finally beginning to understand ... I am willing to accept that this will not happen any time soon but something should have happened to keep the story interesting. Also I was very disappointed about how the legend of the sword in the stone developed. It was weak! I just hope that the next season will be as good as we are used to.moreless
  • Good finale

It's a great episode. It's good to see Merlin showing some great powers. Agravaine is dead, after he knows about Merlin's secret. Morgana is once again defeated, while she's almost dead Aithusa saves her. I like this episode, but I would prefer to see a huge and intense battle between Morgana and Merlin. A doll is just plain simple. And when would Arthur ever find out about Merlin's secret??? I'm dying to know. that Agravaine is dead, who's going to replace him? Looks like Season 5 would be interesting.moreless
  • The Sword In Stone Part II

This was a pretty good series.! I loved watching everyone moment of it! Even my Mum, who usually doesn't enjoy watching Merlin, even said it was a terrific scene! =] It also had a wonderful happy ending... It's a long time since I saw Morgana's face...grateful and suddenly looked happy because Aithusa healed her.

    I can't wait for Season 5!! =P
  • longer seasons?

I love Merlin! this is the best thing to come from Britain besides my family. I just wish they could make longer seasons or maybe 3 short seasons a year? huh? how much do we have to love the show and rate it so that they will make longer seasons? it is already one of the top 10 and the 4th highest rated show on several blogs. i can't find it rated below 11 on any blog i find. Please make longer seasons and hurry with season 5. i can't watch too many re-runs before i go crazy!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (7)

    • Gwen's coronation scene is different from the one that can be seen through Morgana's prophetic dream in episode 3x10 Queen Of Hearts.

    • The intro of the episode consists of previously seen scenes from episode 4x12 The Sword in the Stone Part 1.

    • This is the third time that a straw doll is used as an instrument of magic in the show. In episode 1x01 The Dragon's Call Mary Collins uses one to perform voodoo and kill Lady Helen of Mora and in episode 3x08 The Eye Of The Phoenix Morgana uses one as a likeliness of Arthur to bind the magic of a enchanted bracelet to him. In this episode, Merlin uses it to remove Morgana's magic from her.

    • This episode marks the return of Excalibur. It was first seen in episode 1x09 Excalibur and then in episode 3x13 The Coming Of Arthur, Part 2. The sword has not been referred to as 'Excalibur' in either.

    • Footage from episode 2x13 The Last Dragonlord (used in the scene where the dragon exhales fires on Arthur and his knights when they fight him on the castle battlements) and from3x01 The Tears Of Uther Pendragon Part 1 (used in the scene where the dragon exhales fire on the Serkets) is used in the scene where the dragon exhales fire on Agravaine and his men.

    • Agravaine is the sixth character who refers to Merlin as 'Emrys'. Mordred did so in episodes 1x08 The Beginning of the End, episode 2x03 The Nightmare Begins and 2x11 The Witch's Quickening, Taliesin in episode 3x05 The Crystal Cave, The Fisher King in episode 3x08 The Eye Of The Phoenix, Iseldir in episode 3x12 The Coming Of Arthur, Part 1 and then The Cailleach in episode 4x02 The Darkest Hour, Part 2.

    • As per the History of Camelot, before the birth of the five kingdoms the land was in an endless cycle of bloodshed and war. Bruta, Camelot's first king, put an end to it when he gathered together the elders of each tribe and drew up plans for the lands to be divided in a way that each would rule over their land as they saw fit and respect the boundaries.

Merlin adds some made up extension to the story as follows: when Bruta was on his deathbed, he asked to be taken deep into the forest. There, with the last of his strength, he thrust his sword into a rock. If his lineage was ever questioned, this would form a test, for only a true King of Camelot could pull the weapon free. The stone was lost many years ago during the Great Purge. By pulling the sword out, Arthur (together with his people) is lead to believe that he is the true king of Camelot.

Merlin adds a further made up bit to the story as follows: when the sword was thrust into the stone, the ancient King foretold that one day it would be freed again at a time when Camelot needed it most. The man who freed it would unite the land of Albion and rule over the greatest kingdom the world has ever known. With this second part of the story,Arthur is lead believe that he is destined to be Albion's greatest king.

  • QUOTES (37)

    • Arthur: Did you lose them?
      Merlin: We're safe.
      Arthur: You're sure?
Merlin: Do I look like an idiot?
      Arthur: Yes.
Merlin: He doesn't change, does he?

    • Arthur: Which way now? I thought you said you grew up in these tunnels!
Merlin: I did! It's just it could be that way.
Arthur: Or it could be that way.
      Merlin: Yes.
      Arthur: That's very reassuring.

    • Tristan: You know Arthur?
Gwen: I was a servant in Camelot.
      Tristan: To Arthur?
      Gwen: No.
Tristan: So why are you here?
      Gwen: He's my King.
Tristan: Can't say I've detected many kingly qualities so far.
Gwen: Well, maybe you don't know him.

    • Tristan: It won't take long for them to catch us.
      Merlin: I'll go back.
Arthur: What are you going to do?
      Merlin: Create a diversion.
      Arthur: That's too risky.
Merlin: I know these tunnels, Agravaine doesn't. You keep going.
Arthur: Merlin. Don't do anything stupid.
      Merlin: Me?

    • Agravaine: You have magic!
Merlin: I was born with it.
Agravaine: So it's you. You're Emrys.
Merlin: That is what the druids call me.
Agravaine: And you've been at court all this time, eh? At Arthur's side. How you've managed to deceive him. I am impressed, Merlin. Perhaps we are more alike than you think.

    • Tristan: (About Merlin) He knows the tunnels. He'll find his way.
      Arthur: I'm going back.
      Tristan: For a servant?
      Gwen: You're wrong about him.

    • Arthur: Merlin! Where have you been?
Merlin: Were you worried about me?
Arthur: No. I was making sure we weren't being followed.
Merlin: You came back to look for me.
Arthur:All right it's true. I came back because you're the only friend I have, and I couldn't bear to lose you.
      Merlin: Really?
      Arthur: Don't be stupid!

    • (Sir Elyan tries to stop the Southron men who are taking Sir Gwaine away for another fight)
Sir Gwaine: Don't worry. At least we'll get to eat.

    • Morgana: So you've another chance to sing for your supper. I thought I might make it a little harder this time.
      Sir Gwaine: Seems fair.
Morgana: Oh, but you can't fight with your bare hands (Gives him a small wooden sword) Never mind. You're a Knight of Camelot, you'll be fine.

    • Tristan: Look at you. First you go back to rescue your servant, now you're getting your hands dirty. But then again, why shouldn't you? You're just like everyone else. There's nothing special about you, is there?
Arthur: Maybe I don't deserve to be king.
Tristan: Well, that's all right, because you're not. Not any more.

    • Gwen: Arthur?
Arthur: Don't. What happened in Ealdor was a moment's weakness. What you did to me... everything I cherished between us. Everything we had. It's gone. That will never change.
      Gwen: I'm sorry.

    • Sir Elyan: You need to eat.
Gaius: Whether I eat or not, I am not long for this world.
      Sir Elyan: Come on, Gaius.
Gaius: I am a physician, Elyan. I have spent my days watching the cycle of life. If there is one thing I am not afraid of, it is death. Don't waste your food. If Gwaine has to fight again he will need all the strength he can get.

    • Merlin: Arthur, what's the matter? Don't listen to Tristan. He doesn't know you.
Arthur: I trusted the wrong people.
Merlin: They betrayed you. That wasn't your fault.
Arthur: I was a fool. I've misjudged everyone. My uncle, Morgana. Every decision I've made has been wrong.
Merlin: You're being too hard on yourself.
Arthur: I should be discerning, wise. A statesman. A king! Tristan's right, there's nothing special about me, I'm just like everyone else.
      Merlin: You're not! You're a worthy king.
Arthur: I'm good with a sword, that's all.
      Merlin: Your people love you.
Arthur: Most of them are dead, thanks to me.
Merlin: No. Most of them escaped. And they'll be here, in the forest, I'm sure of that.
Arthur: If they are they'll have to find themselves a new king.

    • The Great Dragon: What is troubling you, young warlock?
Merlin: It's Arthur. He's lost the will to fight. He feels he's failed his people. He believes no longer deserves to be king.
The Great Dragon: The fate of Camelot rests in your hands, young warlock. For you, and you alone, can restore the king's faith.
      Merlin: How?
The Great Dragon: You must make him believe that he can be king once more. I wish I could be of more help, Merlin.
      Merlin: No. I know how.

    • Merlin: I was thinking about last night and how you'd given up all hope, how you were a poor leader and a shoddy king.
      Arthur: Shoddy?
      Merlin: All right, shabby.
      Arthur: Thanks!
Merlin: Well, it reminded me of a tale Gaius once told me.
Arthur: Merlin, I'm really not interested in your favourite bedtime stories.
Merlin: For once in your life, just listen.

    • (About the story of Bruta, the first king of Camelot)
      Merlin: You know the story?
Arthur: Yes, every child in Camelot does. Can I go back to bed now?

    • (Merlin makes up a story about the sword in the stone)
Arthur: Are you making this up?
      Merlin: Of course not.
Arthur: All right. If it's true, why haven't I heard this story?
Merlin: Well, history isn't really your strong point, is it?

    • (After Merlin makes up a story around the sword in the stone)
Arthur: I've never heard so much rubbish in my entire life.
Merlin: Are you calling Gaius a liar?
Arthur: No, I'm calling you an idiot.

    • Arthur: What the hell are you playing at?
Merlin: I'm proving you're their leader and king.
Arthur: That sword is stuck fast in solid rock!
Merlin: And you're going to pull it out.
      Arthur: Merlin! It's impossible!
Merlin: Arthur, you're the true king of Camelot.
Arthur: Do you want me to look a fool?
Merlin: No, I'm going to make you see that Tristan's wrong. You aren't just anyone, you are special. You and you alone can draw out that sword.
Arthur: You'd better be right about this.
Merlin: You have to believe, Arthur. You are destined to be Albion's greatest king. Nothing, not even this stone can stand in your way.

    • Helios: When they arrived there, the ground itself was still on fire. They'd all been slaughtered. Every last one of them.
      Morgana: And Agravaine?
      Helios: Dead.
Morgana: There's only one person who could've done this. Only one man who could command a dragon. This is the work of Emrys.

    • Sir Percival: Arthur, even if we can get inside, she has an army.
Arthur: And we have what? A few hundred...
Sir Percival: And they still outnumber us.
Arthur: Yeah, but only three to one.
Isolde: And do you think they'll fight?
Sir Leon: They'll fight for Arthur.
Arthur: It's not for me they have to fight for. It's for Camelot.
Sir Leon: No, Arthur. It is you that people love, and you that they will lay down their lives for. I know that I would ride into the mouth of hell for you.
      Sir Percival: And I.
      Merlin: And I.
(Isolde looks towards Tristan who is watching the scene)
Arthur: Then to the mouth of hell it is.

    • Isolde: (To Gwen) Never give up hope. Love is stronger than anything.

    • Arthur: (To Merlin) The Southrons are men like you and me. Men we can fight. But Morgana... her power is so great and we've got nothing to answer it with.

    • (After Merlin has made up a story to make Arthur believed that he is destined to rule over the greatest kingdom the world has ever known)
      Arthur: You're making this up.
Merlin: Why would I? Your head's already as big as your waist. I believe it, though. And I believe in you. I always have.

    • (About Emrys)
Helios: We've searched everywhere. He fled, Morgana. He trembled at the sight of you.
Morgana: Then why was he here? Why does he choose to taunt me like this?
Helios: We must hold our nerve. Maybe you should get some sleep.
Morgana: Make sure there are guards on the door.

    • Arthur: This is where we say goodbye.
Tristan: Arthur. All my life I've shied away from other people's wars and despised the power and wealth that Kings buy with the lives of men. But you've shown yourself to be different.
Isolde: You've shown us that you fight for what is right and fair. And for that reason... we would like to fight at your side.
Arthur: I'd be honoured to have you at my side. We stand together as equals.

    • Gwen: Arthur. If anything happens to us I want you to know...
      Arthur: Guinevere...
Gwen: I understand you can't forgive me. But I never once stopped loving you. Never once.

    • Helios: It seems we have company.
      Morgana: Emrys.
      Helios: Arthur.
Morgana: My dear brother. We must welcome him home.

    • (Sir Percival and Sir Leon have fought their way to the dungeons)
Sir Gwaine: Come on, boys. What's taking you so long?
      Sir Percival: You all right?
Sir Elyan: I've been locked up with Gwaine for a week.

    • Isolde: (To Tristan, before facing Morgana and the Southron in a swordfight) Whatever happened to the idea of finding a bit of land and settling down?

    • Arthur: (About Excalibur) You know? This thing's not bad.
Merlin: I thought you might like it.

    • Morgana: Welcome, dear brother. It's been far too long. I apologise if you had a difficult reception. It's hard to know who to trust these days.
Arthur: What happened to you, Morgana? I thought we were friends.
Morgana: As did I. But alas, we were both wrong.
Arthur: You can't blame me for my father's sins.
Morgana: It's a little late for that. You've made it perfectly clear how you feel about me and my kind. You're not as different from Uther as you like to think.
      Arthur: Nor are you.
Morgana: I'm going to enjoy killing you, Arthur Pendragon. Not even Emrys can save you now.

    • (Morgana tries to kill Arthur using magic but Merlin has removed her magic from her)
Arthur: Not so powerful now, my lady.

    • Gwen: What did I do to make you hate me so much?
Morgana: It's not what you did, it's what you are destined to do. I'm sorry, Gwen but I can never let that happen.

    • Isolde: (Badly wounded after saving Arthur's life in a swordfight) I'm sorry.
      Tristan: Shh.
      Isolde: Our dreams...
      Tristan: Isolde, don't.
      Isolde: I wish...
      Tristan: I wish, too.
      Isolde: Hold me.
(She dies in his arms. He kisses her and cries)

    • Gwen: If you want me to go, to return to Ealdor...
Arthur: I want you to stay. Guinevere...
Gwen: You don't have to say anything.
      Arthur: Whatever happened between us...
Gwen: Please, I can't forgive myself.
Arthur: I don't care. I just don't ever want to lose you (Taking her hands in his) Will you marry me?
Gwen: Yes! Yes, with all my heart!
      (They kiss)

    • Arthur: By the sacred laws vested in me I crown you, Guinevere, Queen of Camelot.
(Arthur helps her up and they kiss)
      Arthur: Long live the Queen!
      All: Long live the Queen!
