Merseybeat was a further attempt by the BBC to challenge the hegemony of ITV's The Bill by mimicking that show's then-current format. Like that show, Merseybeat followed the police officers on the beat and in their personal lives, and ramped up the personal drama in 2002.
The first three seasons were set in Cheshire, just outside Liverpool. In an attempt to boost ratings, the fourth season saw a minor revamp, with the action inexplicably moved to central Liverpool.
The credibility of the show was further hampered by off-screen events in the life of one of its stars, and the BBC decided in early 2004 not to recommission Merseybeat for a fifth series.moreless
