Season 4 is a dividing line. It's an uneven season, with some of the series best episodes and some of its worst.
This one is a balance in between. Playing off off the Jim Bakker scandal, Crockett and Tubbs investigate a television preacher's empire.
Proverb, played with great whimsy by Brian Dennehy, and his wife are masters at getting donations sent in. As he says, he has to have the most up to date flashy things, as no one wants to see a raggedy butt preacher anymore.
But he is feuding with a former friend, now a competitor, in Mather.
The nasty side of things hits the officers when Tubbs is framed for rape. But the payoff includes a "leap of faith" and liverwurst and onion sandwiches.
Tubbs goes to night school? That's a bit much, isn't it?
While it is on the mark, listening to "All Wrapped Up In My Jesus" takes guts.moreless
The fury of feuding TV evangelists hits Tubbs when he is accused raping a parishioner.
