  • Desmond Maxwell Is One Bad Dude!

    8.0
We only get to see the character of Desmond Maxwell for a few minutes during the episode, but it is enough to fully justify all the scared talk and tales of his ruthlessness that lead up to that point. The actor that plays him does a class A job of getting menace and danger to jump across the screen at the viewer, and I can honestly say that he one of the few characters that I would be afraid to enconter in real life. This excellent character acting takes what could have been a pretty generic story of drug dealing and double crossing and instead creates a tale that actually makes you wonder who of the important story characters might get killed during the episode. Although no real important recurring character does get killed, the feeling of tension/doom is not totally undeserved as one half of a Vice unit partnership is killed by Desmond's men and the other is seriously wounded. Again, the use of slow motion and freeze-frames amplifies the shootout and action scenes, especially the van chase and the final apartment showdown.

As an aside or as a secondary story aspect, we learn that Sonny is officially served divorce papers and are left with the potential for a custody battle when we learn that his wife is thinking of moving out of state with the son.moreless
  • Another strong early "Vice" tale

    8.0
From the dramatic pre-credits sequence involving an unexpected shooting and a high-speed chase involving two vans, "Cool Runnin'" is an exciting and witty episode that is not short of real emotion.

As with so many episodes of the series, this is an example of excellent television. It is simply a joy to behold - every scene is a gem. Although "Miami Vice" has a gritty edge to it, there's always an element of escapism to the proceedings, even if it's just an opportunity for the viewer to admire the beauty of Miami itself. Not all of the scenes are set in beautiful surroundings, of course. This tale certainly has its seedy locations and they add genuine atmosphere to the proceedings.

In this episode, Crockett and Tubbs realise they're both prepared to cut corners in order to get the right result.

The late, great Charlie Barnett makes his first appearance in the series as the likable Neville 'Noogie' Lamont.moreless
