In season 3's "Forgive Us Our Trespasses", Sonny helped Frank Hackman (here again played with snakelike charm by Guy Boyd) get released from death row, only to find Hackman had in fact murdered his former partner as he had been convicted.

A year later, a heist bears a trademark of Hackman. Sonny insists on persuing it. During a raid Sonny gets off a clean shot while Hackman's return fire kills Hackman's woman. Hackman blames Sonny for it. And thanks to the facts of the earlier episode "A Rock And A Hard Place" Hackman knows that Caitlin Davies is more than "Burnett"'s husband.

We also have a final return appearance by Caitlin (Sheena Easton) who is back in town during a tour stop and nown pregnant, waiting for the right moment to tell Sonny.

They see each other before a concert but she declines to tell him at that point, waiting until after the show. But an emotional climax ensues when we see that Hackman extoll his revenge as Caitlin is shot dead during a performance as Sonny holds her.

The harrowing finale includes a crushed Crocket reacting to Tubbs informing him of the pregnancy, a three week break before returning to work, and the acknowledgement of Castillo and Tubbs letting Sonny go off on his own to encounter Hackman at his retirement villa.

Despite the presence of "equal arms" to alieve censors, it is clear that Sonny passes beyond a moral center and wants Hackman dead, period. The closing scene is painful but chathartic.moreless
