Crockett notes that Frank Hackman is about to be executed. Hackman had killed his former partner in front of his wife and kids and Crockett put him away.
Hackman influences Crockett and Tubbs to reivestigate the case by looking into possibly tainted evidence from Gus Albierro. While they sense that Hackman may be innocent, the DA wants nothing of it, looking to have a strong stance against crime on his platform.
In the end the vice cops get Hackman exonerated to the chagrin of the DA. But in the upsetting conclusion, Hackman gives Sonny his cross, no longer needing it. Crockett realizes he just freed a guilty man.
Guy Boyd is terrific as Hackman. The cross would reappear once more in season 4's "Deliver Us From Evil", the best episode of Miami Vice. But see this one first.moreless
