  • I liked the first half of this episode very much but the second half was rather dull and so I gave it a lower score. Basically, it's a men against women type of episode and was really good ... for a while.moreless

The Skimington Fair is an annual event which dates back a very long way and is a competition between the men and the women of the village. 'The Skimington Ride' is a somewhat medieval event where a male rider is 'selected' by the women to ride backwards on a horse with a black executioner-style mask on his head while the women beat him with kitchen implements!

Before all this fun and frivolity takes place though, the elderly Mildred Danvers is murdered when her hip flask is spiked with strong barbituates. When Henry Marwood, who was visiting Mildred shortly before her death, seems to be telling lies for no apparent reason, and the Reverend Anthony Gant, the 'rider' for the Skimington fete is killed during his display, Barnaby has to figure out how the crimes are connected and try and stop any more from happening, which looks like it will be a tall order because everyone seems hell bent on blaming everyone else and lying to the officers.moreless
