  • 'King's Crystal' is the name of a family-owned glass company in the village of Midsomer Magna but the business and thus the family are close to financial ruin when Alan King, one of the owners, dies overseas in mysterious circumstances.

Just a few short months after the death of Alan King, co-owner of the glassware business 'King's Crystal', (which is going rapidly down the toilet financially) Alan's widow, Hilary, marries his brother, Charles, much to the fury of her son, Ian, who can't believe that his mother would do such a thing. Iam is not fond of his Uncle Charles and the idea of such a man being married to his mother appalls him.

To add to Iam's fury, even though he has inherrited his father's portion of the company, Uncle Charles and Peter Baxter, the accountant for the firm do everything in their power to exclude him from executive decisions and plans. Meanwhile, the company is even closer to bankruptcy than ever and the workers are furious that they have lost not only their jobs but their pensions as well. When Barnaby learns that Baxter has been murdered with a Masonic dagger and was heavily connected to The Masons, he asks Jones to use his own connections with that organisation to try and get to the bottom of what is really going on. Then, another murder occurs and Barnaby is stumped, It is only when he sees Cully playing the role of Ophelia on stage that the pieces start to fit together at last.
