Rob and Libby Wilson are found dead in their home and Barnaby isn't sure if they were deliberately targeted or whether it was a home invasion gone sour. It seems clear though that their deaths were no accident when another local villager, Jack Purdy, is found dead and Tom has to try and figure out if the deaths are connected. (They usually are in Midsomer!) Could it have something to do with a large contract to build a bypass road in the area or is it something else entirely?
Some expert sleuthing shows that there is indeed a connection between the Wilson and Purdy families when it is discovered that it was Jack Purdy's father who ran over and killed the Wilson's young son two decades earlier. One of those protesting the building of the road, Alyssa Bradley certainly knows what it's like to lose a child because her son disappeared some nineteen years previously. To solve the crimes, Barnaby and Jones must find a connection between all of these events.
