A 90-year-old feud comes to a head when the name of a soldier shot for cowardice after the Somme is added to the war memorial at Midsomer Parva. A retired colonel is shot dead, and Barnaby and Jones discover dangerous secrets connecting two families.

I really liked this season opener. The script and the guest actors were excellent. It was edge-of-your-seat stuff, just like a good murder mystery should always be.

Feelings are running very high between the Hicks and Hammond families but that is hardly anything new as they have been feuding for 90 years since Tommy Hicks was shot by a firing squad for cowardice during World War I and Doug Hammond was involved in his death. In the present day, both families are well-to-do and the Hicks family have managed to have Tommy's name cleared of the charges which means that his name is added to the War Memorial in their home village of Midsomer Parva. This does not please the Hammond family but, then again, both families have problems of their own and it only makes matters worse when a Hicks and a Hammond want to marry each other.

When the feud (which actually amuses most of the villagers) turns deadly, Barnaby and Jones have to look to the past to find out who the killer is in the present.

Very good episode and a great performance by Sir Donald Sinden makes this one even more watchable.moreless
