- 4/10/11It is 1938 and Veda (Evan Rachel Wood), now estranged from her mother, has become a successful singer in New York. Mildred (Kate Winslet) tries to get back in contact with her daughter, but Veda ignores her letters and phone calls. Mildred and Monty (Guy Pearce) plan to marry, and Monty invites Veda to sing at the wedding. At the wedding Mildred and Veda reconcile their differences. Mildred's restaurant in Laguna Beach is not successful and becomes a drain on Mildred's finances. Mildred turns to her successful and wealthy daughter for a loan. By 1940 life for Mildred has changed dramatically.moreless
- 4/10/11It is 1937 and Mildred (Kate Winslet) is about to open her third restaurant with her business partner Lucy (Melissa Leo). Now aged 18, Veda (Evan Rachel Wood), rebels against her mother by staying out late at bars and party's. She reveals that she wants to be an actress, but soon after Veda apparently falls pregnant by the wealthy Sammy Forrester (Nick Westrate). After a discussion with Sammy's mother (Hope Davis) Mildred realises that everything with Veda is not as it seems. Mildred and Veda argue, resulting in Mildred throwing her daughter out of her home.moreless

- 3/27/11Whilst working in the diner Mildred (Kate Winslet) brings in some of her home-made pies for the customers to try. They are a big hit and Mildred starts to receive regular pie orders from the diner, and other local restaurants. Veda (Morgan Turner) finds out that her mother works as a waitress and is disgusted, until Mildred reveals she plans to start her own business one day. With the money she received from her divorce Mildred opens a restaurant, but soon after the grand opening tragedy strikes.moreless
