  • What fans would call a "mythology" episode, "Owls" both serves the major story arcs of Millennium Season 2, and stands on its own as a great hour of television.

It's amazing how well season 2 of Millenium has aged; doesn't feel dated at all... well, until they refer to the coming millennium, of course.

You know how David Fincher used Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" to such chilling effect in Zodiac? Season Two of Millenium utilized music in a similarly effective fashion, and the "Horse with No Name" sequence in "Owls" is one of the best examples.

Another credit to the Morgan/Wong run is that the episodes of the second season kept getting better, building toward a worthy climax in "The Time is Now". That didn't really happen on the X-Files after "Anasazi" capped off season 2.

"Owls" is the meridian of the one truly brilliant season of Millenium.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • Revealing Mistakes: In the scene where the bomb explodes at the airport, the box does not move and the contents (sweater) are not damaged.

    • Continuity: When the bomb explodes and the scene changes, the security guard inspecting the box is gone.

    • Revealing Mistakes: In the scene when the bomb explodes in the airport, the pager is obviously a fake.

    • Factual Errors: Peter seems to claim that "INRI" stands for "one to be mocked or humiliated." The Latin initials "INRI" written on the cross during the crucifixion of Jesus stands for "Iesus Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm", i.e., Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum. Translated to English this means "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Frank: You looking for me? You must be, because no one else lives here.

    • Peter: "The patriarch of Jerusalem carried the cross into battle before the Crusaders. For nearly a century, they did not suffer a single defeat, except when the cross was not present. The Muslim armies, to whom the cross had no significance, were victorious while it was in their possession. They were not defeated, until it was buried. Even the Nazis had the Vichy Government in Damascus searching for the cross, convinced of its mystical power. Should a battle... Lara, should Armageddon occur. The cross must be in our possession."

    • Peter: "Can you imagine the effect conclusive evidence of doomsday would have on a world, in which, millions actually believe they've been abducted and experimented on by aliens with the knowledge and co-operation of government officials? A country that obsessed for decades on Elvis sightings? Roswell?"

    • Frank: "This Group... Millennium... convinced me to return to a realm I never wanted to experience again for the safety of my family... my own sanity. And yet, for those very same reasons, I agree to work with this group I believed was a criminal investigative consulting firm. I became devoted to this. I respected Millennium. I respected you. And even... came to respect myself... But then, there's hints and intimations. Passwords and candidacies. Centuries old origins; end of the world prophecies. Secrets and lies..."
Peter: "I've never lied to you."
Frank: "Millennium knew the identity of the man who had stalked my wife. You knew that for years and never told me. That... is lie! You knew I would kill him! You knew it would take me from my family. The very reason I joined you."

    • Mr. Johnson: I'm certain the Millennium is not imminent... Others in the Millennium Group know this, as well... The Owls have proof... We've been developing the evidence since Galileo smuggled his work to Group members while under Church arrest... An event will happen, Lara. The earth will change. But our prophecy is a secular, scientific understanding. In the way I can 'prophesize' the sun will set tonight... and rise in the morning... In the way Einstein's Theory of Relativity 'prophesied' Black Holes decades before anyone could ever observe such phenomenon... How many times in history has theological apocrypha created hysteria, been used to assume power, diverted focus from actual vital concerns? How many times must Ezekiel, Mark:13, and Revelation be wrong?

    • Mr. Dean: "Only twice in two thousand years has the Millennium Group been so divided."

  • NOTES (5)

    • Some of the background music in the episode is taken from the season 1 episode "Lamentation." It can be heard mostly when Peter and Lara are looking at the video of the incident at the airport.

    • 1998 Emmy Nomination: This episode garnered Donna Beltz, Jeff Charbonneau, Mark R. Crookston, Ken Gladden, Michael Kimball, Maciek Malish, Debby Ruby-Winsberg, Michael Salvetta, Susan Welsh, Jarmil Maupin, Gary Murello, and Gabrielle Reeves an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series.

    • During the Crusades, it is said that a piece of the True Cross was lost to the Saracens under Saladin during the Battle of the Hattin (at the Horns of Hattin) on July 1187. During the siege of Acre (1191), Saladin used the True Cross in negotiations with Richard the Lionhearted and Philip Augustus over the treatment of prisoners and hostages. The ultimate fate of the cross taken by Saladin is not clear.

    • When almost 80 years old, Saint Helena (250-330) mother of Constantine the Great made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. According to the Online Catholic Encyclopedia, St. Helena discovered during excavations three crosses buried in a well or ditch. According to tradition, one was the True Cross. After the discovery Constantine and St. Helena erected a magnificent basilica over the Holy Sepulchre. One portion of the Cross remained in the Holy Land enclosed in a silver reliquary. The remainder (with nails) was sent to Constantine.

    • Features the song "A Horse With No Name" by America.
