  • After a meandering two-part premiere, "Millennium" gets back to basics.

    9.5
This is the kind of story Chris Carter had in mind when he created "Millennium," so it's no surprise that for his first script for the series in over a year, he and Frank Spotnitz deliver a taut, "ripped from the headlines" crime story with a heavy millennial influence.

It's almost funny to see this episode nearly a decade in to the 21st century and remember the tremendous fears about the "collapse of society" due to the Millennium Bug. But there was always that degree of uncertainty that was accompanying the move into the year 2000, and this episode captures it (and of course, dramatizes it.)

Like any good mystery story, "TEOTWAWKI" is full of misdirection. What appears to be a school shooting jumps to a shadowy cabal of corporate executives, and a suicide that really isn't sets Frank and Emma on the trail of the survivalists.

The "new family" of Season 3 gets more developed. Frank and Emma are settling into their partnership, Andy McLaren tries his best to oversee his unit and Baldwin proves to be pernicious and smug to a fault. Plus, it's great to see Stephen James Lang back as Giebelhouse, if only briefly. His interactions with Frank during Seasons 1 and 2 were always highlights. Nice turn from Robert Wisden as the CEO behind the survivalist cult.

Interesting that Carmody's warning to Frank about the Y2K bug, "You can't stop it!" echoes back to the Frenchman's dying words from the "Pilot."moreless

    • In the scene in the hotel room before Geibelhouse arrives and the camera pans towards the door, you can see a boom mic in the reflection of mirror in the upper right corner.

  • QUOTES (1)

    • Frank: It is prophesied that when the end comes, it will come in darkness: a catastrophe all foresaw but few believed. Most of us will battle too late against the chaos, but not the few, the radical few, who obey no discipline. Unencumbered by conscience, they prepare ruthlessly pursuing their own preservation. If they survive, the rest of us perish.
