The date is not specified in this first-ever Miss Marple story, but it seems to be a year or two after World War II has ended. England is changing, and fast, even in a tiny, out-of-the-way place like St. Mary Mead; but not everyone has noticed. Colonel Bantry and his wife still employ an enormous retinue of servants at Gossington Hall, but their once-secure position is insidiously undermined once a corpse is found on the premises. Soon, the Colonel finds that shopkeepers are not as obsequious as they once were and that credit is harder to obtain. Even the formal politeness of the police has a chilly edge. These subtle changes in society are so delicately observed in this series - so little can now be depended upon; only, in fact, the steely gaze and ruthless logic of Miss Marple herself.moreless
